It is a sorry sight to see how often and numerous school shootings take place in this country. These students instead of going to school only focused on working to further their education, rather have to be worried of the threat of a school shooting. There are days given to drills which take time out of the class and learning opportunities. I believe that it is agreed by all, that the number of annual school shootings has brought the nations public education system into a deplorable state. With the annual number of school shootings since 2013 ranging from a low of 37 to a high of 65 in both 2015 and 2017. Furthermore whoever can solve this issue with a fair, cheap, and easy method of making the educational system of America safe again; and remove all possible risk of …show more content…
If all students were to attend online schools the emissions of gas into the atmosphere would lessen as children did not have to transported to and from school daily. This would also clear up most morning traffic within heavy populated cities and towns. I have too long deviated, and therefore shall return to my subject. I believe the pros which I have made, are both clear and bountiful, as well as of the highest importance. For starters, it will completely do away with the possibility of school shootings. Without a place where students are forced to attend and interact with one another there will be no reasoning for, or an opportunity for a school shooting. Without public schools there will be no more bullies, mass meeting places for people to meet and be shot at, the equation for school shooting will simply no longer add up. Moreover, it will cut down on taxes. Also it will provide a structure for students to get the individualized education they need. With the standardization of online schooling students will be given the opportunity to go at their own pace weather it be faster or slower than that of their
Whereas the causes of school violence are mostly theoretical, the effects of mass school shootings are stark and terrible. In the past twenty years there have been many incidents, both small and large scale, of shooting in schools. Two of the most well known of these are the Columbine shooting in 1999 and the Sandy-Hook shooting in 2012. Twenty-six people were killed in the Sandy-Hook shooting and thirteen in the Columbine shooting (“School Safety Timeline.”). One boy described his experience at the Sandy-Hook shooting as, “I saw some of the bullets going past the hall that I was right next to, and then a teacher pulled me into her classroom” ("What Happened in Newtown”). It is hard to imagine the terror and life-long effects that such an incident would cause among children. These stories cause a fear in many students that makes it difficult to create an environment for learning. It is obvious that something must be done to protect children of all ages in public school.
Thirteen people were killed at Columbine High School in 1999, thirty-three died during the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, and twenty-seven people, twenty of whom were children no older than seven, were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 (Kirk). These name only a few of the larger and most well-known school shooting incidences. In total, 297 people have lost their lives due to school-based shootings since 1980 (Kirk). Although this number may be small in comparison to death by guns overall, these instances are completely unwarranted and it is likely that they could have been avoided or at the very least reduced. These people, college and high school students, teachers, and even children, might still be alive today if our
If you recently picked up a newspaper or turned on to see the news you may have question what is happening in our schools and begin to think whether our schools are still safe places for children. Recent school shootings have set feared in many parents about their children's safety in our schools. Since last year number of school shootings by students have occurred regularly. On Tuesday February 29, 2000 in Mount Morris Township, Michigan a six-year old boy shot his classmate to death in their first grade classroom. Police reports show that the two youngsters had an argument the previous day. A single shot was fired inside the classroom at Buell Elementary School around 10 a.m. The young boy said he brought the gun to school to frighten
School violence, is an issue that is hard to deal with. There are things that may be done to decrease it but it does not seem like it will ever go away. Parents send their children to school to learn, to have fun, to pass notes, and to meet new people, not to be shot at and never have the chance to come home ever again. They should not have to think or be afraid of sending their child to school and never seeing them. Last year one of the worst school shootings took place at Columbine High School. Not only did it effect the famlies of the victims and of the killers, pretty much the whole nation was involved and many people were brought in to figure out what had happened, and why it happened. This incident brought our nation together, and
Our schools have been deeply affected by mass shootings and weak gun violence laws. This country has had over 1000 mass shootings in the past two years and over 50 school shootings, killing thousands of innocent little children. Our government needs to put up strict gun laws that allow administrators in all schools to use necessary force against a school shooter or anyone who tries to harm students of such nature.
Throughout the years there have been a numerous of school shootings, and they have become more mainstream, this has caused people to stand up to the government for not doing nothing about it. I plan to argue an issue that has been put aside, and it is more relevant than ever. At the start of 2018, there have been many school shootings about 1.25 a week.
Since then, almost 150 school shootings have happened in under 20 years. On the morning of April 20th, 1999, 2 teenagers opened fire on their peers and educators. Although they attended the school as seniors, they were often bullied and seen as social outcast. This is one of the main reasons as to why the shooting may have occurred-the other being the ability for these children to obtain firearms. Overall, 13 people were killed and 20 more were wounded. In addition, the two perpetrators committed suicide that day at the High School. This terrified thousands of students around the nation. If it could happen at Columbine, it could happen at your school. So why didn’t the government do more to prevent shootings like this one to happen again? Other major shootings since then occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary and Virginia Tech. The former took place on December 12, 2012. 26 people were killed by the 20-year old gunman. The latter took place in April of 2007. 23 people were killed in this, the worst single act of gun violence in US history. All of these shootings should be indicators that our government needs to be doing more to protect America’s students. In the last 20 years, homeschooling rates have more than doubled. Could this be do to a parent’s unwillingness to send their child to school out of fear? Although we’ll truly never know, this is an extremely plausible reason as to why these rates have skyrocketed. Parent’s should be able to trust the American education system. The columbine High School shooting was the first shooting in the modern era to spark the debate about gun violence at school. It also made people rethink bullying and the allure of violent goth culture. Since then, the regularity of school shootings has increased, resulting in the major events listed above. The school shootings that have occurred in the modern era have
As a student at a public high school, it is scary knowing that at any time something wrong could happen. Schools have some safety precautions, for example code red drills and having a locked door before anyone can actually get into the school. But recent events have shown that schools are definitely not the safest place considering 17 people were killed at a high school in Florida on Valentine’s Day. The government can ensure that it will never happen again if they make a few changes. If there are new and improved gun laws, then everywhere will feel safer and people will be less afraid.

It seems like every day there is a new school shooting being reported on a news source. Unnecessary lives of American students are lost forever due to one, just one person, who decided it was rightful to take the lives of innocent children. There are many theories floating around about how these tragedies can be prevented, but the most common theory is arming teachers in public school systems. On paper, it looks like a good idea, but in practice, unfortunately, it is not the best solution for this unfortunate problem and here is why.
Since twenty-thirteen there has been at least one hundred sixty school shootings in America, these numbers are alarming. We should feel secure sending our kids to school not fearful. A subject to controversy in America gun control, currently in debate to prevent school shootings. Unfortunately, Gun Control is not the answer to school shootings, access to mental health treatment can prevent them.
How many children need to be killed in school in order for something to be done? In recent years school shootings have come to be all to regular. For some waking up and going to school has become a fear that they might not live through the day. The amount of school shootings that have occured is outrageous and not enough has been done to prevent it. What schools and government should be doing is working together to put forth more security that is properly trained, figure out the causes of these tragedies, and try to find solutions.
Imagine a world with no guns or weapons. Imagine a world with no mass school shootings. It would help keep everything and every child safe. Just as the school shooting is a big world risk, kids threatening to take action, and that schools need to install metal detectors as kids walk into school. It may be a hassle, but it sure can prevent any bad events from happening.
Can you imagine a normal day of waking up in the morning and going to school, as you are in class or walking to class you hear a loud sound and booms starts to happen. You are going to be terrified to death, because you would not know what to do. The school shootings are way out of control and the law is not really doing anything about it, So how are the students supposed to feel safe at school when they are already scared to go because of not knowing how to do the work, bullies, and getting ignored by everyone, which pretty soon all leads up to someone just snapping, and not being able to take it anymore and go on a rampage with a weapon most likely a gun and start shooting everyone or everything around him or her. There have been a lot
From Elementary schools to colleges, this is happening. Over 49.8 million enrolled in public school in 2012. Although that may seem like a substantial amount of children,, the 297 that have lost their lives seems like more of an impact. Every year, more than 250 students in the Chicago Public Schools are shot, approximately 30 of these shootings are fatal. To deal with this problem, CPS CEO Ron Huberman launched the $60 million violence prevention initiative in September of 2009 a program that have received a substantial about of national attention as an innovative attempt to bring the violence rate down, and increase the education of the students most at risk for violence and destruction. During this study a graph was made to determine the factors of children that were more susceptible to being shot. For example if you have ever spent time in a juvenile detention center, raises the likelihood by 2.5 percentage points. I feel that conducting this test has helped determine some factors that could represent some problems and be better equipt with solutions. Some of the largest school massacres were at Virginia Tech, 2007 killing 32 people. Columbine High School 1999, 15 people dead. The Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, the horrific story we all remember in 2012. Where 28 people died. It's really unfortunate our world has come to this harsh reality of our society and its upbringing. Now people have said that teachers should have to get their concealed handgun license (CHL). In 15 midwestern universities they did a survey on whether or not to be able to carry a concealed handgun on campus, faculty and students. When totalled up 1,649 students 92% returned their voting ballots. The majority 78% of students was not supportive of concealed handguns on campuses, and 78% claimed that they would not obtain a permit to carry a handgun, if it were legal. That just goes to show and prove that people are uneasy about
