Scientific Method and Health Care

The Scientific Method is represented by a reasonable order of steps used to come across a conclusion obtained by an experiment or attentive observations. There are five orderly steps which are the following; asking a question or stating the problem, creating a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, evaluate the results, and create a conclusion. A method used by scientists to find an answer a question or the solution to a problem. Now, let’s take a closer look of what each of these five steps consist of.

Sources cited must be relevant, comprehensive and current as to provide evidence that the study conducted was necessary (Burns & Grove, 2011). Walker cited both quantitative and qualitative studies to describe current knowledge of the problem and need for additional research. The literature was effective and relevant to the focus of the research study. The author used literature to build a logical argument in the introduction and complement the findings of the study in the discussion. Available studies were not evaluated nor were weaknesses indicated.

Therefore, the following literature review will examine articles and their findings within this controversial topic.

The next paragraph will offer a critique of the research validity and reliability, the currency, relevancy, authority, accuracy, and the limitations of the research. The next brief paragraph offers the conclusion of the source. The above will be repeated for the next two sources to equal a total of three annotated bibs. After the annotated bibs will be a summarization of findings – where findings were similar, different, areas of conflict, and major conclusions you’ve synthesized as a result of your critical appraisals. The final paragraph will be how what you’ve learned applies to clinical practice.

Cormack (2000) states that the literature review is a critical review of previous literature relating to the research topic. Therefore this section aims to provide the reader with an understanding of what the current state of evidence is in the selected area of study.

When comparing this article to a good literature review, it successfully provides an adequate overview of previous research done and uses it to enhance the project at hand. When evaluating the quality and relevance of this article, Martins and Jensen do an admirable job communicating the purpose of research to the reader and organizing its literature review. The data from other studies is in chronological order and are structured from broader studies to more specific ones which is seen when the sources are cited. An analysis was provided after presenting the findings from previous studies and the authors were able to communicate how those studies influenced their own research. Literature can be obtained from a wide variety of sources; newspapers, journals, databases, books, encyclopedias, digital sources, and much more. Information obtained in this section helps the researcher understand the magnitude of the problem defined in the first stage, recognize any consequences and gaps that other researchers may have not filled, and identify potential strategies to combat the problem.
