What steps are being taken to keep students safe? The topic has risen, ‘should teachers be armed?’. Teachers should be armed in order to protect students from possible threats. School shooting has dramatically risen since 2000, though they dated back to 1764. Teachers would be trained and very prepared to handle any ‘code red’ emergency. Though there are opposing points there are solutions and positive outcomes for most.
School should be a place of peace and opportunity, but gaps in the system of gun control threatens the safety of faculty and students. School shootings have killed a total of 297 lives, young and old (Slate Magazine). Gun control has been a continuous nationwide debate for many years. It seems that no one wants to take a stance against guns unless they are personally affected. In order to take control of the matter and prevent more incidents from continuing schools need to change. To achieve a safe environment in schools need to educate faculty, safe and students, heighten security, and assess mental health issues.
School should install high tech safety features around their school like cameras or alarm systems. Talking to my cousin Kamalpreet about school security was a must because she goes to school where there were lots of crime-related issues. She always talks about what happened at their school. Kamalpreet said she witnessed lots of crime happening around their school and that their school doesn’t have any type of security arrangements. Many people fight at their school and no one is there to stop them because of lack of security system. She said “no matter what type of school it is they should have security arrangements for their school safety.” Also she said “that as new technology is on the rise and they should make some type of detectors to keep schools safe.” Every school should have some type of security and it is not cheap to get security systems. The whole issue is about money because they are too expensive, so not every school can afford them. There are many ways to raise money if school tries and that money can help with security. Raising money is always an option when it comes down to children’s safety. Teachers should keep children on the right track then they will go into right direction and that will help school as a whole feel safer. If teachers don’t teach anything then children will fight with each other and school won’t feel safe, but that is also up to the students. The Department
You hear almost every day another school goes into lock down or some crazy lunatic takes a gun to school its every tragic to hear of students and teachers getting shot. You hear of parents so afraid to send their child to school or not knowing when they drop their son or daughter off it will be there last. What if we can take preventive measures to help prevent a troubled individual or make them think twice about taking a gun to school? There are many things that schools can do to secure the students inside and are being implemented, but who are the students always around? And who sees the students more than anyone else? The teachers and I believe we can do the most good by arming them with guns after the proper training and
After the Sandy Hook, there were countless ways for students to be safe at school. In Preparing for the Unthinkable: School Safety after Sandy Hook news article, Vicki Bauman said, “ Instead of gates, guns, and metal detectors, let’s invest in the things we know will make us safer: counselors, health care, teaching positive behavior, and making sure we have services to reach out to disconnected youth and pull them back on track.” Therefore, violence is not the answer to any question or issue. The community and school system should take a stand and get the necessities that the schools need to have a safe environment for the students and faculty and staff. The school can invest in law enforcement. The law enforcement will be able to conduct a consistent search through a metal detector. The law enforcement will help the students to avoid bringing prohibited weapons to school as well as, there to protect the school.
Whereas the causes of school violence are mostly theoretical, the effects of mass school shootings are stark and terrible. In the past twenty years there have been many incidents, both small and large scale, of shooting in schools. Two of the most well known of these are the Columbine shooting in 1999 and the Sandy-Hook shooting in 2012. Twenty-six people were killed in the Sandy-Hook shooting and thirteen in the Columbine shooting (“School Safety Timeline.”). One boy described his experience at the Sandy-Hook shooting as, “I saw some of the bullets going past the hall that I was right next to, and then a teacher pulled me into her classroom” ("What Happened in Newtown”). It is hard to imagine the terror and life-long effects that such an incident would cause among children. These stories cause a fear in many students that makes it difficult to create an environment for learning. It is obvious that something must be done to protect children of all ages in public school.
The intention of this paper is to look at and present some issues and strategies that members of a school community think about when trying to create safer schools. Particularly when addressing an active shooter in a school setting. A major issue to consider when trying to keep all schools safe, is the simple fact that no two schools are the same. Understanding this can lead us to the conclusion that it is impossible to have one global plan or program that can be 100% effective in all schools. “Violence prevention programs work best when they incorporate multiple strategies and address the full range of possible acts of violence in schools. For any set of policies to work, it must be established and
During the past few years, the number of school shootings has increased markedly. In 2013, there were 19 school shootings that occurred, taking so many innocent lives. Some may remember the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14th, 2013. It was the second deadliest massacre shooting in United States history, behind the 2007 Virginia Tech Massacre. Adam Lanza shot twenty children, six staff, his mother, and himself that day. School shootings are tragic. Violence continues to increase with these shootings, as well as with violence within the schools among the students. The big question is, how do we protect ourselves from these horrible occurrences? How do teachers protect the innocent lives of their students? One common suggestion is for the teachers and administration to be armed. The premise is that if the school staff has possession of firearms this would discourage shooters, thereby making the schools much safer. However, it is my belief that teachers should not be able to have access to weapons. There should never be any type firearm on a school property, excluding trained security personnel, such as police officers and security guards.
he first main idea, that has been argued much more then needed, is that teachers will be trained to not shoot kids that are acting up. The teachers would be attending a gun safety class. Many (as in people against this argument) say that the teachers wouldn’t attend this class, but a recent survey, conducted by the NRA, shows us that 40 million teachers would like to be armed and would take the Gun Safety Test. The course, that which is mandatory, would likely e sponsored by the NRA. The course that the teachers would be attending, is a 40-60 hours a week course (in the summer time), and the course doesn’t stop until the teacher can pass the exam. The exam is simply being able to hold a gun, reaction time, and being able to know when and when not to shoot. Just recently, 04/10/2017, a school shooting killed two teachers, and injured two students, both kids being injured severely. If those teachers in San Bernardio where armed, they could have saved their lives and those children’s futures. Also in 2013 teacher aids, the principal, the school psychologist, teachers, and 20 children ranging from 6-7 were killed in Sandy Hook, making a death total of 26 people, plus one. That plus one should not be accounted for, that plus one was the
Since the year 2000, there have been more than 188 school shootings reported on both high school and college campuses (Erickson). As each shooting occurs, the number of injuries and death tolls continue to rise. People across the country are determined to find the answer to the key question, “What can we do to keep our students, faculty, children, and families safe?” This question is not easily answered while imagining all the possible consequences. The individuals directly involved with the nightmare of school shootings are campus security, faculty, and students. They all can play a part in keeping their school safe when gunfire transpires among them. To find the best solution for school safety across the country, a decision needs to be made between the
Imagine yourself in school. It is your 7th period class and you are just waiting for the bell to ring to finally go home. The day has been totally ordinary until you and your classmates hear a loud gunshot coming from outside the window. Students are screaming and running frantically around the room. Teachers are rushing around doing all the procedures they learned from past drills. Except this is not a drill. This is real. You and your classmates huddle in the corner. Outside the school you hear more gunshots. Would this situation be different if teachers had guns? The answer is no. Teachers and staff at schools shouldn’t be armed with guns.
An approximated 260 teachers are being physically abused every day for doing their job. Any students that are suspected of being involved with a school shooting plan, should be searched by administration with authority. If contraband is found, then they could decide to turn them over to the police if it was felony or involved weapons on school grounds or to find rehab for them if it involved drugs. Locker searches would greatly reduce the risk of school shootings, but other measures, such as more evasive action could help reduce the amount of teachers and students at
My initial reaction after reading the article, Teachers With Guns by Wade Livingston, struck me furious. I recall thinking out loud and trying to explain to myself the reason as to why schools, which I had always thought to be one of the safest places throughout my childhood, had become projecting danger zones throughout our nation. Schools are supposed to be a place where a child can go and learn and not have to worry about being put into danger. I am not in anyway blind to the dangers of today’s society and with the amount of school shootings on the rise; I am in agreement with the argument that something has to be done. However my early response was that arming teachers was NOT the way to protect the campuses.
Should Teachers Be Armed? Imagine that you are a teacher, and you are forced to shoot and possibly kill another human being. Maybe it is even a student of yours. Would you?
Imagine being in a classroom of an elementary school and hearing loud shots from the hall. Many teacher’s first instinct would be to protect the students in the classroom and move them out of the way of harm. In the Sandy Hook school shooting, twenty students’ ages six and seven, and six teachers lost their lives due to an armed intruder. Initially the vice principal and school psychologist heard the sounds of gun shots and entered the hall to investigate. One was wounded and one did not return from the hall. Potentially if there was a sign posted outside the school announcing that teachers were in possession of a firearm it may have deterred the gunman from ever entering the building. In another part
When you stop and think about it, shouldn’t everyone be certified in CPR? Do you ever ask yourself if you should be CPR certified? Teachers, lifeguards, and other counseling jobs should be certified in CPR for emergency purposes.
