Should Teachers Be Able To Carry Guns For Deterrent Reasons?
During the past few years, the number of school shootings has increased markedly. In 2013, there were 19 school shootings that occurred, taking so many innocent lives. Some may remember the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14th, 2013. It was the second deadliest massacre shooting in United States history, behind the 2007 Virginia Tech Massacre. Adam Lanza shot twenty children, six staff, his mother, and himself that day. School shootings are tragic. Violence continues to increase with these shootings, as well as with violence within the schools among the students. The big question is, how do we protect ourselves from these horrible occurrences? How do teachers protect the innocent lives of their students? One common suggestion is for the teachers and administration to be armed. The premise is that if the school staff has possession of firearms this would discourage shooters, thereby making the schools much safer. However, it is my belief that teachers should not be able to have access to weapons. There should never be any type firearm on a school property, excluding trained security personnel, such as police officers and security guards. There are many reasons that teachers should not carry firearms. One reason is that children like to get their hands on absolutely everything, especially children who are younger. Many children love to allow their imaginations to run wild. They like to search for
School should be a place of peace and opportunity, but gaps in the system of gun control threatens the safety of faculty and students. School shootings have killed a total of 297 lives, young and old (Slate Magazine). Gun control has been a continuous nationwide debate for many years. It seems that no one wants to take a stance against guns unless they are personally affected. In order to take control of the matter and prevent more incidents from continuing schools need to change. To achieve a safe environment in schools need to educate faculty, safe and students, heighten security, and assess mental health issues.
My second reason as to why teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon is that it has worked for other countries. Israel and Thailand actually encourage their teachers to carry weapons. There was an article in 2004 in the National Review that is about how Israel and Thailand are set examples of arming teachers. The article stated that, “Though Thailand’s government is extremely hostile to gun ownership in general, it has recognized that teachers ought to be able to safeguard their students and themselves.” I agree with this. Teachers should be allowed to protect their students and themselves and if allowing the teachers to carry a concealed weapon will protect them then let them do it. The article also stated that, “Terrorist attacks on schools and school children could almost be completely eliminated in a very short time.” There are examples of attacks on schools that have failed. In
Should teachers be trusted to take on the tremendous responsibility that comes with bearing arms? Due to the frequency of school shootings in the past decade, the idea of arming teachers has become more prominent. The dilemma that often arises is whether or not arming teachers will prevent more problems than it will cause. David Person, author of “Instead of arming teachers, hire police” points out in USA Today that, “Slightly more than 60% of Americans oppose arming teachers, according to one poll.” There are numerous reasons as to why teachers should not be armed. To begin, teachers were not hired to be first responders. Additionally, teachers being armed can potentially cost more lives and result in teachers having to cope with shooting
Teachers should not carry concealed weapons because of the dangers that it can cause to the school’s safety. First of all, it would be extremely dangerous for teachers to be firing weapons in the classroom. These are risky, costly, knee-jerky
Schools should arm teachers with concealed weapons on campus because it can increase the security of the schools, it can prevent the likelihood of shooters attacking, and it can minimize the amount of student fatalities.
Although most people have argued that gun control laws should be regulated in schools, closer examination shows that having trained/licensed faculty could prevent further shootings. All school faculty should go through an examination process where not only is their mental health checked but they are also licensed to have a gun. A lot debate that it is going to cost a great amount of money to be able to administer these licenses but with a small budget reduction for other activities the efforts can be made to make a safer environment for any student and employee. Looking back to all school shootings there was one key element missing in all of them: Protection within the school. Multiple examples from Columbine High School shooting or Sandy Brooks
Teaching at a typical small town school in rural America one day, shots ring out. Active shooter drills come to mind, but what do we do, where do we go, how many students are present? Panic sets in. Thoughts of hiding, running, calling out for help and screaming all flash across the forefront of the mind when a person can be seen walking down the hall with a large gun in hand. No one ever thinks it could happen in a town, school, or church like ours but when the act is committed everyone feels the betrayal. Although schools from elementary to universities have adopted drills for active shooters and have routes with plans drawn up we never know how we will truly react until the time comes. Armed guards stand at the ready at most entryway doors but they are only one person and can not be everywhere always. In a recent study of active shooters for the Federal Bureau of Investigations, J.Pete Blair and Katherine W. Schweit have said, “The second most common incident locations were in educational environments…and the study results established that …these incidents involved some of the highest casualty numbers” (20). Crime is always a threat to education and defending our students nationwide should be a priority. The trouble begins with the fact that the school shootings are becoming more regular. Allowing teachers to be armed gives administration, faculty and students a more successful chance at survival against an active shooter in our education systems.
The topic of teachers carrying concealed weapons, has grown since tragic school shooting are occurring more frequently. Recent talks have been about using teachers as frontline defenders. School is suppose to be a safe place for students to learn safely. Teachers shouldn’t have to carry concealed weapons.
Part of the reason why teachers should have guns is what causes school shootings. What is the cause school shootings? Who is to blame? Is it the broken homes, the lack of god or, the fact that there is to many guns? “Should we blame the government or blame society or should we blame the images on TV?” The thing to blame is fear. Everyday America lives in fear of each other and everything. They fear each other because of their skin, religion and where they live. A foot ball player from Missouris said “I mean, people were looking at us like we were aliens.” They were looking at him because they
To begin, I am a student. I am a student that feels this should be an extra safety precaution at ours schools to help parents and other students feel safer. How would you feel to get a call from your child’s school telling you that your child has been shot in a school shooting? How would you feel as a student to know that one of your, innocent, fellow peers might die at the hands of someone that they didn’t know? I can tell you now I know I would be very upset and feel very unsafe. As a high school student life is very stressful. From exams, to friends, to people you don’t particularly get along with, life is very stressful, we don’t need to be worried about someone coming to hurt us or our peers. This is why I believe all teachers should be armed at school.
After all one should be able to fight fire with fire. When it comes down to it, the right to bear arms is a right that is deeply rooted in the American constitution. This right applies just as much to teachers as it does to anyone else. Having a right to bear arms means there is always going to the threat that one person can draw and use a weapon against another.
Only teachers who feel comfortable with a gun should be allowed to have a gun. You would not want someone who is uncomfortable around a weapon, to have a weapon in school. Having a gun goes with personal opinion, because they might have had a bad experience with a gun and would not want to carry one, or they might want to carry a weapon to feel more safe by the number of recent school shootings. I believe that only one to two teachers per hallway or wing should have a gun. My grandma was a reading specialist for 40 years and she would never would have wanted a gun.
The first reason why teachers shouldn't be allowed is because it is dangerous for students. The reason for that is students might get there hands on it. Also if the gunman comes out of nowhere the teacher isnt gonna have time to get all the students in one area. Also the teacher won't have time to make sure the students
With the recent mass shootings at a Florida Highschool, it is no wonder people are requesting that teachers be able to carry guns in the classroom. Unlike many others, I feel that teachers should not be able to carry guns in the classroom. Teachers should not be allowed to carry handguns because, it increases the chances of more shootings in schools. It will cost the government more money, and the number of teachers may decrease due to some not being comfortable with carrying a handgun.
This topic is of importance to me since I have a considerable amount of family members that are either teachers or administrators in the public school system. I want to know what the risks and rewards associated with arming the staffs with handguns. I likewise have a brother and several young cousins that attend public schools and I want to know how their parents feel about their children’s teachers carrying guns in the classrooms. If in the event the teachers were to carry guns, what sort of guns would they carry and what kind of preparing and training would be provided to them to ensure safety for not only the teachers
