When considering the social class of an individual, I tend to analyze the educational aspect and the experiences they had over the course of their life. As I was growing up, both of my parent social class position is in the working class group. They didn’t have the opportunity to attend college / university nor graduated from high school when they were younger due to the situations that wouldn’t allow it to happen. They grew up in Southern China and their families didn’t have much money for them to go to school. Instead, they were working to earn enough to just buy food and to survived. When they came to the United States, life was better for the both of them. For me, I want to study hard to at least graduate to earn a bachelor degree so I
Group obligation is a topic that has given rise to many differing opinions and philosophies to emerge, even to this day. The question is whether or not certain groups have the duty or the burden of helping out another group, and any answer only leads to more questions. If yes, how much help? What is the best way to go about it? If no, then there is the looming question of morality and doing what is right. When faced with a question like this, answers can be looked for from many different facets. Religion, economics, or science can be used to guide one’s opinion on this topic.
In reality class always matters and it shapes our interests in life. We all come from different background and ethnicity. I believe that class is shaped mainly by income and occupation. However, many people think if a person is wealthy, therefore, he belongs in the upper class. But there are other factors that define class and it is more than just how much money you have. It can be the network of people that surrounds, traditions, and academic status that can also define class. Many of it has to do in which family you have been born and network that creates it. All of my family members have been born and raised in Russia; they completed universities, got jobs, and had enough income to support a family. “Each of us is born into a family with a particular class identity and class history—sometimes it is a mixed or hybrid identity—but almost always it is part of a network of other relationships—to other families in a community, to work and jobs, and to institutions” (Zandy 112).
An inequality in society, economy, wealth distribution, and political corruption and the influence in cooperation of government led to
Social class is a division of a society based on social and economic status which can include levels of wealth, success, power of authority, and influence. Status is can be defined or grouped having common economic, cultural, or political interests.
The fictional stories Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Really Really by Paul Downs Colaizzo, and A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens are all set in societies with classes that either dignify great importance or lack thereof. Character interaction, plot points, and demeanor of the characters are all influenced by their social statuses. In A Tale of Two Cities it’s nobility versus the working class. In the more modern story, Really Really, Leigh and her sister represent poverty in an affluent atmosphere. The futuristic society of Brave New World is completely centered on the differences between the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon classes. The differences between the classes or castes are huge throughout all of these stories. Although the societies in the semester readings are set in different times, they are all the same and show that the hierarchical aspect of society is always based on the
America is seen as the land of opportunity across the world, but many people wonder if it is true. The truth is America does have opportunities and with dedication anything is possible though the opportunities are limited. Usually limited for those who belong to a lower social class. The main reason opportunities are limited are because of America’s social inequality. The social class of America is separated into multiple groups that struggle with each other due to the inequality of power and wealth on the daily basis.
1.)Social class is a “class society, a set of concepts in the social sciences and political theory centered on models of social stratification in which people are grouped into a set of hierarchical social categories”( Grant,2001,p.161). The most common being the upper, middle, and lower classes. The upper class consist of people or families that represent institutional leadership, heads of multinational corporations, foundations, and universities. They are people who have finical stability and are well educated due to their finical income. Most commonly in American society today people fall in the middle class category. Middle class is made
Social Class is a division of a society based on social and economic status. In today’s society there are three main social groups in America: upper, middle, and lower class; these rankings are contributed by mass amounts of factors, but one of the main factors that people cannot control is their race and ethnicity. Race and ethnicity, likewise as gender, can also play a part in a variety of other concerns such as, education level, income, and where you reside.
Social class affects society in many ways. Throughout research I found that social class mostly affects health, life and education. The rich has more advantage than the middle class and the middle class has more advantage than the lower class all due to money. Health is one of the most important factor in one’s life. The poor are more prone to diseases and are the ones who are disadvantaged in the healthcare system. The lower and working class have low access to fresh produce and exercise facilities. The rich get one of the best education while the poor end up dropping out of school due to financial reasons. Education is also very important for preventing diseases, having a healthy diet and properly exercising. The poverty in the lower class
Social class is split between many things including race, religion, income, and many other factors. Some people believe that if you are born into a poor social class you are stuck in a poor social class and this is just not the case. My father was born in Muskegon, MI to a loving christian family. This family was not rich and my father told me stories of how he would have to walk three miles to school because the bus would not come to his house and how he would have to walk on different streets to avoid danger. School did not come easily to my father but due to his hard work went to a community college. My mother on the other hand was born in the small town of Shelby, MI. My mothers parents did not go to church but were an average family when
There are many factors that can contribute to what class someone is a part of. The amount of money, education or the employment that someone holds can help identify your class or rank. If someone is born into a lower class status then they might work even harder to try and achieve a higher class, this might require more effort and longer working hours on the individuals end. Sometime it is hard to get a good paying
I believe that social class is an important factor in determining ones social location, because of the idea that social class is what places people into groups. This grouping, also known as social stratification, is based on several different things. My social class has affected my social location significantly, because of the fact that I have been provided with the necessary resources to be successful. I would consider myself a part of the upper middle class, due to my parent’s success in the workplace as well as in their society in general. The reason I chose social class as a determining factor of my social location is because of the fact that my social class as of now is based on that of my parents. Whereas if I were able to support myself I may not have chosen social class, but instead used the subcategories that make up a person’s social class, such as education and income.
For Ulrich Beck (2004) social class is a ‘zombie category’, embodying nineteenth-century horizons of experience. He argued it because of these inappropiate horizons and it still soldered in our consideration. Social class has made social inequalities arised. These social inequalities also happened in educational system where pupils differentiated in economic and level of material and cultural resources that families can bring to their engangement with schooling (Diane Reay, 2006). In this article, the researcher showed description of new paradigms of old problems and how the problems seemed wake from the dead like a ‘zombie’.
Further into the inclusion of the treatment of migrant civilians, “And the women sighed with relief, for they knew it was all right-the break had not come; and the break would never come as long as fear could turn to wrath.” (Steinbeck 435) illustrates the frustration of the mistreatment of migrant-specific laborers. Before the quote, an insult is made comparing the laborers to animals as the others are anatomical human beings. These belligerent remarks are prime examples of social suppression used in the hopes to have those of a lower stature break down and give into whatever demands the abuser desires the victim to do. In this era, it’s more of a separation of social classes to create this more aesthetically pleasing “American dream” and
Socio-economic class is reflective of occupation and education, combined with wealth and income to position one relative to others in society. These factors play a significant role in shaping someone's life chances and choices. Social class has much to do with who we are today. For example, access to jobs and education is often determined through the categories of social location and identity. White, middle-class/wealthy, men and women, statistically speaking, are given more access to college entrance and corporate executive employment than to any other persons of any
