Technology is rapidly advancing, and in today’s day in age, social media is integrated into the majority of people’s everyday lives. Individuals should take into consideration their professional persona when it comes to social media, due to the fact that it will be beneficial for them and any future companies they are involved with. Take for example the incident that occurred over Twitter with American Red Cross. The company recently tweeted out an inappropriate tweet saying, “Ryan found two more four bottle packs of Dogfish Head’s Midas Touch beer… when we drink we do it right #gettingslizzard.” (Huffington Post 2011). Now instead of dealing with the backlash and negativity that emerged from the tweet, the company was thankfully able to turn it around and even launched a blood for beer campaign that gave beer to people who donated blood. Not all companies are able to turn around and save their reputation like American Red Cross however, and it is important to make sure what you post on the internet will not get you in hot water. Taking into account that technology is forever, and once something is posted, it is out there. People think that they are safe and have the ability to simply delete any data that can hurt their reputation, but it is never really gone. In order to prevent any future conflicts, it is best if people really think about and make the right decision on if what they are posting online is necessary or appropriate. According to the Harvard Business Review,
You are walking out of the new Star Wars movie, posting about how superb it was, when suddenly you are swooped up and thrown in the back of a vehicle. No one would have thought posting about how you were there earlier would provoke such a situation. After all, social networking is “safe” and “friendly.” Now, social media is defined as “A form of electric communication through which users create online communities to share information,” according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Social networking began in 2004 and has sky-rocketed since, due to its sense of world connectivity in a mere moment. However, with this increase, a growth in seemingly harmless threats has occurred. Users sitting behind a screen are usually unaware of how complex and diminishing social networking can be. Social media may be considered negative for society as it changes what members view as behaviorally normal, increases the risk of cyber-suicide, and reduces the amount of privacy in one’s life.
Addiction, profit and influence usually are not the first words you would expect to come to mind when thinking about the term “social media,” yet with a little digging you will soon realize it could be the perfect description. Social media can be defined as forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages and other content. Most often social media is understood as a positive concept because of the ways it has allowed us to attain cheap and easily accessible knowledge at the end of our fingertips. For example, take the average college student who would rather spend their last $20 at the bar you can conclude that there are superior consequences to abusing too much of a good thing; using social media has its own set of superior consequences.
Social media is a powerful tool that is used by millions of people, and there are many variations to it. How powerful exactly is social media? Is social media powerful enough to influence how people feel and behave? The short answer is yes. Social media can cause a variety of emotions and isolation that can ultimately lead to depression. One common emotion that can lead to depression is envy. Social media will make people judge themselves harder because they compare themselves with others and criticize themselves for not being good enough. Isolation from reality can also trigger depression. With social media, people can also feel pressure and anxiety to live up to the world expectations.
For many years, the world has heard stories about children and teens who have gone missing or taking their lives because of social media. Some think that social media should be restricted to only allow so much information. Others think that social media is a form of expression that can help teens and businesses grow. By adding restrictions, such as a limit to what information you can share on your profile, the government can help combat prevent identity theft, social media related kidnappings, and reduce cyberbullying even though the opposing side disputes these reasons and stance.
Romantic relationships have become super complicated in recent years. The movie He’s Just Not That into You portrays ten people’s perspectives on relationships and dating in the 21st century. This movie was written as interweaving stories that come together in different ways that make a point. People find the world of dating to be complicated and most times confusing. There is always a fear of cheating and falling in love with manipulative people. Social media has also become a huge part of modern dating. Everything from texting to dating websites can influence how people view potential mates. The Facebook status was invented expressly for discovering if someone was single within the first couple seconds of being on the page. You can practically advertise that you’re single to any of you friends in hopes of finding a date. Dating today can be fraught with conflict and miscommunication and is vastly different from the dating world fifty years ago as it now includes a “hookup” culture, a non marriage centered mentality, and the use of modern technology.
Over the years, technology and even social media have gotten more advanced. Some of the things that I had as kids that are no longer popular anymore. That even for me is different, but I still find it fun to have a real conversation with people. Most people today have some sort of social media. I also think that this could be cause people to become antisocial. Yes, social media can be nice to keep in contact with family that is miles away, but if it is overused and used for the wrong reason it can cause issues. Social media is causing the younger generation to become antisocial they no longer want face to face conversations, they do not need to leave their house’s for entertainment, or even feel lonely after spending hours online.
Social media. We’ve all heard of it. We’ve all raved about it at some point in our lives. There is no doubt; it plays an imperative part of people’s lives today – many users are heavily reliant on social media. It’s great that Mark Zuckerberg reminds us to say “Happy Birthday” to our friends. However, we’ve all seen the dangers it can cause. From identity fraud to cyberbullying. Every day people are exposed to the dangers of the internet. Not only is it hackers and frauds that cause destruction, but social networking posts. Every day, you scroll through Facebook, or Instagram, liking, sharing and commenting on posts, however, do you ever think of how those posts can cause harm to someone? Do you ever think about what those posts can make someone think? Do you ever think of the hurt or pain someone can cause themselves because they are not that perfect post?
Over the years the view of marriage has changed. Society has constructed the views of what a marriage should look like and what roles should be played even who should be married. Today’s social media glorifies all aspects of marriage, from prenuptials to annulments as well as overdramatized weddings and divorces. Respect has been lost as there are more and more reports of infidelity and less privacy of family and home life. Marriage was something that was once significant and held in high regards has fallen victim to the social construction of a newly defined meaning. One aspect that has changed marriage is the cohabitation between two individuals. Cohabitation encourages premarital sex. Society accepts cohabitation and

Social Media: Some say it is taking over our lives one day at a time, while others say today’s generation of children and teens are just the beginning of a technological revolution that will continue to benefit and make our lives easier one day at a time. Through studying the technological benefits as well as more simply growing up in a technological era, the benefits of social media in our everyday lives becomes more and more clear as opposed to being a nuisance to society as some suggest. Social media has proven to be an effective tool in serving and protecting society by providing an outlet for law enforcement to investigate crimes and ultimately get offenders off of the streets. Social media outlets have also proven to be a way to promote a more interactive and easily accessible classroom from any location. With social media readily accessible to almost anyone with access to technology in the world, populations became more informed of the events in their communities, states, countries, and even the world. As technological advances have propelled humans into a new century there is bound to be a shift in social norms. As the times change, so does societal views on acceptable values. One such possibility is the standard value accepted by mainstream society in which the way a female body is sexually portrayed in the media. It appears that society has not only accepted this standard, but has increasingly encouraged a more sexualized representation of the female body. Social media is an informational highway about what is accepted by the larger society and inferred by the individuals who consume it. The internet has increased the amount of information, basically limitless, people can receive via Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, and many other forms of social media. What are the risks and consequences of the messages that are sent to and received by adolescent females through the social media of the idealistic sexualized female body? We hypothesize that, social media increases the risk of self-objectification in adolescent females increasing the risk factors for mental health disorders and puberty development. The purpose of this project is to discover the risks of self-objectification and the effects that it has on the mental health of adolescent females. This topic was chosen based on the idea of gender related oppression that we as female social workers may encounter both personally and professionally.

Whether it is Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, people aged 13 to 35 have been constantly discovering new ways to interact with each other through a digital medium. But given the enormity of social media, it can only be expected that its effects are just as great. One of the key areas social media affects in these people is language. Therefore, messaging in social media and other forms of digital communication are expanding American young adults’ vocabulary, their attitude towards language, and the forms in which they communicate.
