Social Media can be defined as “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages and other content (as videos)” and its first known use was in 2004 (Merriam-Webster, 2014). Social Media is a staple to almost everyone’s daily lives. It’s how people connect with one another, rally together for a certain cause, share their thoughts on world news, or get up to the minute updates of a current sporting event. Social Media plays an important role when it comes to the Sports Industry. With an endless portal of stats, scores, and real time updates, Social Media websites and apps have made it easier for professional teams and players to interact and connect with their biggest fans. The most popular websites and applications teams and players use is Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Other ways fans can engage with these teams is through applications they can download to their phones or tablets like the Major League Baseball application or the ESPN app. These applications are unique as they can be set to send notifications directly to the user about live game changes, league or team news, or changes to the team roster.
