Society and Technology in "The Anthem" Essay

Now-a-days, when we think of the future, we picture flying cars, and being able to transport. In the novel “The Anthem” society and technology as we know it had been driven to an entirely new direction. The characters in the society do not have the right to speak freely nor do anything that they wish. They lost all of their freedom, they couldn’t even think for themselves. The society had to think as a whole, the word “I” did not exist in their vocabulary. The society is very balanced, and everyone fears the thought of even questioning it. Up until one man known as Equality 7-25271 wants the answers to all of his questions. The novel is expressed as Equality 7-2521’s diary. One of the many benefits of having the novel written in a diary format, is that you get to really understand what the character feels about his surroundings. Most of the other people in the society don’t notice their setting nor do they have knowledge of anything else. Equality 7-2521 describes his surroundings as being small and dark, all the buildings which are plain mark the housing of several different people. All the citizens of this society are over-worked and tired yet they have no intention of complaining because they fear the punishment. This novel would not be the same if it was written in any other form other then a diary, as well as if the novel was written in first person. It would not have to same effect on the readers. There are so many diaries, but all are written in the first person, so “The Anthem” is unique. We get a better understanding when Equality 7-2521 writes in third person, without it, we would only hear his thoughts and observations instead of the ones he has gathered from others.To illustrate, when he first meets Liberty 5-3000, the readers were able to pick up some signs that she shows, these prove that she was a bit interested in him. But Equality 7-2521 in the other hand found himself very attracted to her, and as if to not make any obvious communication, he decides to admire her from afar and she does the same to him.
