Race and gender are two important terms in society that define us. However, they lead to inequality among individuals. "Race is a socially defined category based on real or perceived biological differences between groups of people" (Ferris and Stein 216). It is based off our biological makeup that distinct us from others (Ferris and Stein). Many people do not know the actual term of race, how deeply rooted it is, or where it derived from, but it all works in one form. Race goes a long way from how you may appear to someone. Just because someone looks a certain race does not mean they will not have inevitably biological material from other races. It is very diverse between many different populations. Race does not identify who you are but what social category you are from. Gender is how you physically appear in society. "Gender is the physical, behavior, and personality traits that a group considers to be normal, natural, right, and good for its male and female members" (Ferris and Stein 243). It is the identity of masculine and feminine. Gender identifies who we are and it reflects deeply on a person's personality. They normally change over time from the assigned sex given at birth. Society has its way of discriminating between race and gender and it shows differences distributed among individuals.

Socioeconomic Status is where a particular person or group of people stand in regards to social class. The main measurement that determines one's socioeconomic status is level of education, occupation and income. Although it may not be considered a factor in child development, socioeconomic status can actually play a huge role in determining what kind of adolescent a child develops into. It can influence a child’s morals, self-esteem, grades and many more aspects of a child's life. Socioeconomic status can play a role in determining where a person resides, the occupation they end up getting, their education and their income as well. So, although one’s socioeconomic status is technically made up of these aspects, one can be born into a low socioeconomic status which could result in them continuing to have one throughout their life. It is a cycle that one must break in order to change the outcome. Low socioeconomic status can result in child poverty. Child poverty over the years has risen and fallen but has remained consistently apparent in America. Child poverty can have detrimental effects on developing children and adolescents. It may influence the way they are raised, taught, cared for and many more aspects of the child's life which are important for successful development. Socioligists argue that race is a social construct because of the argument that their is no real biological basis to race. One particular race does not contain certain genetic materials that is not common to the entire human population. While it serves little purpose from a biological perspective, race is still very relevant as a cultural, or social categorizer. The goal of this paper is to present an ‘argument mapping’ of the documentary “Difference.” In the process of mapping the argument, I will proceed to do the following. First, I will introduce the claims made clear by the producer. I will connect these claims to the evidence that the producer uses to support them. Based on the connections that I found between the claims and the evidence, I will rename the claims in order to make them understandable as elements of the documents larger argument structure. Mirowsky and Ross say that being in control on your education helps an individual boost their self esteem and gain self control. If a child is sent to a good school when they are young, continue with their education and receive a college degree, they are able to get a good job in the future. By having a well paying job, the individual is able to purchase things that keep them healthy.

The socioeconomic levels between the North and the South had a wide variety of different lifestyles. In the North, their main focus was manufacturing goods and the speed of the product production. On the other hand, the South has to be patient with the crops, and the weather in order to have a good harvest time.

Society has been split into different social classes, specifically separated based on their role in society. Members of particular social classes have been oppressed, specifically people of low socioeconomic status.
