While genetic management of foods can be traced throughout history, the modern phenomena of GMOs and transgenic plants have come to light in just the last few decades. In today’s modern society, the science of biotechnology and the process of genetic modification are developing throughout the planet. As of 2004, 8.25 million farmers in 17 countries were using genetically modified crops. Today, approximately two- thirds of all food offered in supermarkets has been genetically modified. However, the subject of GMO’s is one of great controversy. Although this modern invention does have some positive results on the food industry it also has brought some negative consequences along with it.

This finding became the foundation of the genetic modification process. In 1983, the first transgenic plant was created. Scientists were able to create a tobacco plant that could resist anti-biotic. Shortly after this creation, genetically engineered cotton was effectively field tested in 1990. Five years later, Monsanto the leading biotech company, released herbicide-immune soybeans. Finally, the promising science of genetic modifications was improved even further in 2000 with the discovery that the modification process could be used to bring vitamins and nutrients to enhance foods.
Although many may disagree, there are many advantages to genetic modification in foods. Environmentally speaking, Crops that have inherited pest resistance through genetic alterations often reduce the need for the application of chemical pesticides. Chemical pesticides can often have harmful effects on the environment. They can kill beneficial insect species in the field and get into other ecosystems when washed into waterways. In addition, genetic engineering can be used in many ways to improve the efficiency of crops. Resistance to herbicide and insect pests are two ways can help to improve productivity. With the improvement of productivity comes the reduction of cost. The use of GMOs can reduce the need for the application of chemicals. In some cases they may lead to traits which ease planting, harvesting, or processing in ways which reduce the cost of production.
Genetic modified organisms, or GMOs, are living organisms that, through the genetic engineering process, have been altered to withstand certain chemicals and increase the nutritional value of the product. In fact, the majority of the foods found at the grocery store are genetically altered. Genetic modification is becoming increasingly popular on farms throughout the United States and moving into other parts of the world due to their increasing yield capabilities and pest and weed control. However, this has been, and continues to be, an extremely controversial topic of discussion in the world of agriculture and biotechnology, as well as health food critics, because of potential environmental and health risks.

These plants have been modified in the laboratory to enhance desired traits such as increased resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional content. Many believe that it may help improve crop harvests and farm productivity by developing genetically modified crops that can either resist pests or chemicals. But despite the promise that GM crops may offer, there are still doubts that linger among a number of people as well.
I analyzed the data using the constant comparative method as found within the field of sociology. The constant comparative method consists of analyzing a single interview for themes, then using these themes to analyze the remaining interviews (Boeije 2002). The interviews are also analyzed against themselves to discover new themes and alter the beginning themes. In addition, the interview data will be compared between the gender of the interviewees, the roles of the interviewees, and the phase during which they were interviewed. The observation data is analyzed in a similar manner, however instead of comparing interviews the different observation sessions will be compared to first the initial observation session and then between days of the week and time of the day.
In chapters one and two of the Introduction to sociology we learned all about the basic concepts of this study. I chose to write about three topics that both interest, and affect me directly such as the educational system, sports, and music. Starting with the educational system, it has come to my attention that many schools are funded based upon their population and standardized test scores. This affects many people's lives including the students as well as the teachers. It puts extra pressure on teachers to teach students to pass tests rather than actually acquire new and useful information all while putting a disadvantage on the students who intend to further their education. Education based upon population and standardized testing seems almost outlandish. No one can guarantee that how GMOs’ side effects will be long-term, continuous and proving safety is beyond the capabilities of current technology. Any scientist that looks into the research and found the lack of research on the safety of genetically engineered food comes to the conclusion that these foods should not be on the market; they need another decade or two decade of research . The use of GMOs in agriculture is a risk that is simply not worth taking. Supporters of genetic engineering argue that the application of biotechnology are to improve the nutritional contents of various foods which will help people who suffer many deficiency diseases. As well, they claim that GMF (genetically modified food) can yields medical benefit by injecting a particular genes or vaccine (). However, GMOs are only a temporary portion, not the essential solution for nutritional improvement of foods and medical benefits. Their own disadvantages far be greater than their own advantages.
