“The poor we shall always have with us, but why the hungry?”- John van Hengel, founder, St. Mary’s Food Bank. John van Hengel was the founder of one of the largest food banks in the United States. His idea spread to other cities and eventually carried enough of an impact to cause other countries to follow suit and open food banks as well. John’s concept of a food bank is the same as a typical bank. This being born when overhearing a mother talking about how difficult it was to feed her family. Upon this revelation of the mind, John set out to seek his local parish, St. Mary’s Basilica. The questions I asked her are those that are listed on the website for this course. I did some research into the background and history of St. Mary’s Food Bank and have that as my initial section. I started of by asking Mimi when she got involved with the food bank. Mimi has been involved with the Surprise food bank since 2004. She started off by coming in regularly to volunteer her time to help sort and organize food drives. She then fell in love with the entire process and feeling that it gave her. She helped with the Kids Café, which puts together meals for school programs that are for before and after school. Mimi told me that this made her feel good because she once was one of the kids who was in the before and after school programs. I then lead into what got her into volunteering and eventually ending up where she currently is. Mimi told me that she was referred by a close friend and after being involved decided to become the coordinator for the volunteering services. She not only is an overseer for the volunteer work, but puts forth her own time to do the work that everyone else is doing and continuing to add to the time spent helping the cause. When asked about what events she has participated in she listed of a ton of different events that the food bank does every so often. Mary’s operates and how it provides an effect to those that go in and help. Finding an organization that helps out the community in many different ways, from helping those in need with jobs, food, probation and many other struggles. St. Mary’s food Bank is an organization that can change lives and one that does change lives on a daily basis. This sparks an interest into the inner workings of St. Mary’s and those that put their time out on a table for others to benefit from and draw a sense of hospitality from. I am glad that I chose the food bank because it has such a positive reaction from the entire community. No matter what demographic, everyone can use help every now and again.
St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance gives back to the community that is struggling on a daily basis. This is done year round with the help of volunteers. Whether the volunteers are doing for a person benefit or just to have something to do. It’s a way for people to build a relationship with a program that could end up used by someone that once was a
