During my senior year in 2012, I decided to applied to universities however; my parents were not able to help me out financially. Since the Dream Act was not available until January 2013, I decided to attend a community college. I decided to enroll at Santa Monica College and then transfer to a university as a Physical Anthropology major. I took enough classes to be a full time student and still be able to help my parents around the house. My plan was to stay at Santa Monica College for 3 years and then apply for transfer; however, two of my most dear and closest family members became ill. My uncle, who has always believed that I could achieve great things in life, who gives the best advises in the world, and who taught me how to play the clarinet
During my senior year of high school, my paternal grandmother was very ill with cancer. My paternal grandmother would always talk about how happy she would be if I went to UC Davis for my bachelor's degree. She mentioned my older brother’s dream school as a great school for my passions. With her health declining, I decided to fulfil one of her biggest hope and dreams. My grandmother passed away in the summer of 2016 and I knew she would be able to pass on to the afterlife happy, knowing her grandchildren are going to achieve at their highest potential in the future. Although I am grateful for my own achievements, support from my family and where it has taken me, UC Davis was not truly the place I want to be. I truly wanted to attend a school

My mother and sister we’re able to find gainful employment and no longer rely on me financially. Of course with my father’s passing I no longer have to travel back and forth. And I’m able to focus on my course work. I’m still employed with my same employer. Now, I have a more understanding upper management team who works with my school schedule and allows me to work part-time. I was also diagnose with attention deficit disorder and I now work with the DRC here at CSN to ensure I have all the accommodations I need to succeed here at CSN. I also utilize the resources here on campus such as the SRC (Science resource center) and the smart think tutoring services on canvas. I’ve also retaken courses to rehabilitate my GPA to prove that I do want to be successful here at
My most significant endeavor since attending community college has been has been protesting Capitol Hill at Washington, D.C. demanding congress to pass a clean Dream Act. As a member of the organization United We Dream, I went with them on a 16 hour long bus trip to the capital from Miami. Once we got to the capital, we went to a local church to practice how the protest was going to happen. At the church, I met many students like myself who all came to voice their demands to congress. During the lunch break, I met a student my age in the same grade. He noticed I was wearing a University of Southern California jacket and asked if I went there. I told him that I was a community college student at Miami Dade College planning on transferring there, that's when he told me he also attended a community college in Colorado and was planning to attend the same university.
Graduating high school was an exciting time, but I felt lost. I wasn't sure of my career goals or what I wanted to accomplish at University. When I first decided to attend community college, I felt hesitant because I did not take the traditional route like my other classmates. However, community college was cheaper and would give me time to figure out the career path I wanted to take.
In the College Transfer Success class I have learned about what is needed to be successful in college and in my career. So far we have learned about degree choices, college culture, student development and our own personal learning styles and skills. Through this class I feel more confident about my future and my success in finding a college and career I will enjoy.
My mom is a food service worker and my dad was a christmas tree farmer. Although we never had a lot of money, we made things work. We never went on any vacations and I wasn’t able to play sports because they cost too much, but that was okay because we were together and happy. Now that my dad is no longer here to support us, we have been struggling. The mortgage is always behind, something always seems to be shut off in our house as a result of not being able to pay the bills, and the pantry isn’t as full as it used to be. Financial issues has also been affecting my education. As I’m applying to colleges, I find myself limited in the number of schools I can apply to because not all colleges have fee waivers I can’t afford to pay several fees to apply to as many colleges as I’d would like to. I’ve also had hesitation in going to college just because of the cost of it. My goal in life is to become a doctor, which, normally takes around eight years. Eight years of college is not cheap, and the idea of having to pay thousands of dollars has scared
After high school, I chose community college to work on basic courses while I decided on my future bachelor degree. At Tompkins Cortland Community College, I maintained a 3.37 GPA, qualified for the Dean’s List in two semesters, and graduated with honors. As a reflection of my abilities at the time, I would say that despite my achievements, my GPA was not as high as it could have been. None of the classes were overly challenging and I was dedicated to my studies, but my job took up valuable time. On average, I worked thirty-eight hours a week in order to support myself in college. I often felt crammed for time, and cut corners in order to get assignments in on time. For the quality of work I was able to put in, my GPA is accurate. However, given better means, I know that I could have graduated with a more appropriate GPA.

Once my brother graduated high school, my mother moved 500 miles away, to Connecticut. I decided to remain at home in West Virginia with my father. For various reasons, such as drugs and alcohol, living with him was no longer in my best interest. At this time, I was half way through high school. For a few months, I spent time living with friends. Before long, my grandmother, who I'm not particularly close to, graciously allowed me to live with her. She lives below the poverty line. In order to live in her house, I was driven to support myself. I work between 20-30 hours a week, which allows me to pay for bills, my vehicle, food, and etc. As soon as I graduate, I will be living on my own, and paying for my college tuition, by myself. It is difficult now to make ends meet, and in the coming college year the financial difficulty will greatly increase. I am endeavoring through these hard times, and I will only continue to do that by keeping my grades up as well as having the endless
When I was a senior in high school I was accepted to Penn State and a few other schools, and was really pleased with how I had done at the end of my four years at my school, Council Rock North. But after a few weeks of investigating the potential costs and realizing that my savings would not be able to cover the costs of attending a 4 year school without putting my family and myself in a lot of debt, I realized that I could instead go to the local community college. I really liked this option because it allowed me to explore many of my passions for Computer Science without making a huge investment and locking myself into a certain path. Having now spent the last 2 years at Bucks County Community College, I've really deepened my passion for
My intended major is that of bachelors in Japanese. Japanese has always been an interest to me as I grew up in the Japanese side of my household. Due to this upbringing I have been exposed to Japanese culture since I can remember. Though my Father and Grandparents refused to teach me the language as a young age, they began to support my interest in the language and culture when I started journey in Mira Costa Community College. In Mira Costa, while taking my first Japanese course, I was introduced to the Japanese club at the college. In this Club, the members made sure to create activities and programs that would help spread the culture and knowledge of Japanese and the language. Along with this came people that introduced myself to the International
I am a first-generation, Chicano and will soon finish my last semester before I transfer to a four year university in the upcoming fall. Coming from a first-generation household, I have had to overcome many obstacles to be in the position that I am now in. Community college has been a valuable resource that has allowed me to pursue an amazing education at a low price which has eased the burden of high tuition on my parents. Sometimes it is the cost of education that impedes those that seek it and scholarships are one avenue in which they become easier to travel down the path to success. Coming out of Gilroy High School years ago, I was unsure of what I wanted to major in and devote myself to but I had the amazing opportunity of enrolling in University of California, Merced.
