Watch out before you dip those feet in the water! Next time you’re on vacation in Hawaii or Alaska, be cautious of the jellyfish that reside in these waters. The Alatina Alata and Chinorex fleckeri, most commonly known as the Hawaiian and Australian Box Jellyfish, respectively, excrete one of the most poisonous venoms when they sting. Several articles and websites post absurd remedies which claim itself as a quick fix for this problem. In fact, it’s a huge problem to be considered. Many misleading articles may spread the word on methods of sting-site relief which may cause potentially lethal consequences resulting from the collection of false, unsupported data.
Scientists Angel Yanagihara and Christie Wilcox conducted an experiment to determine the most effective way to prevent further aggravation of a sting site; the scientific article is published in the Journal Toxins. Before we touch on the subject of sting-site relief methods, I want

Get ready to have those tweezers ready because plucking is found to be one of the most effective methods of removing remaining tentacles from an affected sting-site. Not only does it prevent further contact with other surrounding areas of skin, but because pressure—usually caused by scraping with an object (e.g. credit card scraping is a method known to be popular among false data)—can trigger a release of venom from the tentacles, plucking with tweezers proves to prevent this occurrence. In an attempt to encourage increased effectiveness, apply heat. Application of heat may be suggestive of accelerating the firing of venom, but quite the contrary, it reduces the activity of the affected sting-site whereas cold significantly induced activity. Although, their experiment concluded that it was ineffective for Australian Jellyfish because complete rupture of cells in the sting-site occurred faster than the heat could prevent, so seek medical assistance as soon as possible and pluck the tentacles until they
I will never forget the time I got stung by a wasp. In July of 2008, it was one of the scorching summer time this year for me. This summer my sister and I suppose to go swimming at a beach. Instead, we went swimming at a relative's house who had a barbecue party. When we arrived at the house I already felt excited. Henceforth, when I was swimming in the pool. I felt a needle in my neck, but I had avoided it, though. Because I had thought it was a cramp in my neck. Eventually, I felt a sting again and rip something off my neck. I started freaking out wondering what was it until I saw something glowing in the water and it was a massive wasp. Since I didn't kill the wasp I try to escape, but I couldn't. Because I felt dizzying, having trouble
There are many Cnidarians that live and thrive in our tropical waters. Although most are harmless to humans, there are some that can kill you in a matter of minutes. The Cnidarians defend themselves with their stinging cells called nematocysts. When a predator or threat comes too close and brushes against its tentacles, it injects toxins into the blood stream and often effecting the nervous system. In most cases, if a very dangerous jellyfish is spotted along a stretch of beach, the life guards will close down that beach.
Its venom destroys the walls of blood vessels near the site of the bite, sometimes causing a large skin ulcer.
If you are going scuba diving in the lake, prepare to be amazed. The lake contains a rare, non-stinging jellyfish that lives within the fresh water. Bring along an underwater camera to really capture this rare event. Meanwhile, fishermen can enjoy plenty of opportunities for public fishing on Lake Ouachita. The lake is home to largemouth
The Koster site located in Eldred, Illinois is an exceptionally unique site because of its multiple inhabitants over nine-thousand years during the archaic period. Each layer of the Koster site reveals a story of the people living there, and gives a visual into what people living there did, what they ate, and how they lived day to day life as ancient Native Americans (Indiana University of Penn 2015). The Koster site is just one of the many archaeological sites in North America, which seems to be consistent with other ancient peoples living during this archaic time period.
The southern blue-ringed octopus is only the size of a golf ball or smaller and weighs only about 38 grams. Their arms can grow to be about 15 cm long. Thousands of people suffer the bites from the southern blue-ringed octopus. Sadly some of these bites can mean death for some people. Most bites happen in the shallow parts of the ocean. The people that are most likely to get bit are young adults and children. If you see someone get bit you need to call 911 immediately so that they have a better chance of living. Some symptoms are vomiting, changes in you vison, and difficulty swallowing. After five to ten minutes you may have a hard time breathing and you can become paralyzed. If you get a bunch of poison and didn’t know that you got bit, you could die. Most people that have gotten bit say that it does not hurt at all. So if you want to go swimming in the shallow parts of the ocean make sure you shuffle your feet so that way you don’t step on
Local wound infiltration is an attractive method since it is efficacious and adverse actions are minimal (12). However, this route is limited by the fact that duration of analgesia is limited to the duration of action of local anesthetic. Efforts are being made to increase the duration of action of
They can sting repeatedly, but they only do so when defending their nest
In the article,”Australia has lots of venomous critters, bug stings, bites rarely deadly” by the Newsela staff talks about how many people are scared of animals in Australia. Like there is a box jellyfish that it’s consider the most toxic sea animal on the planet and it can release strong chemicals that it even can take someone life away.
Prior to the experiment, Smith gave himself 5 stings per day for three months prior to the experiment in order to increase his bodies immunity to the bee stings. Smith determined 25 different sting locations on his body to test. These locations, ranged from the inner nostril
“In the final analysis, Dr. Stinguard, what motivated you to launch a faulty viral vector worldwide to the detriment of so many?” Godafrid said, turning toward the prisoner’s dock. “Were their lives of less importance than yours? Did their lives matter at all?”
However, if theey nests are disturbed, they tend to attack the intruder in swarms. Its worth noting however, that while their stings are painful, yet not lethal, certain inviduals may experience a lethal allergic reacton, known as anaphylactic shock.
While they do posses stings they generally do not attack aggressively and if threatened, their primary reaction is to swim away. However, a defensive reaction causes it to whip up their stinger which is often the case when attacked by predators or stepped on.
In addition, if you've had a bad allergic reaction to a sting in the past, you should consider wearing a medical alert tag that lets first responders know about your condition. You may want to use the buddy system when you go outdoors, especially if you go on a picnic or hike in the woods, so there will always be someone to call for help if you get stung. And finally, never let your guard down. There could be a hornet on your soda can or a line of fire ants marching up your picnic table. Always remember to check your surroundings wherever you go since insects are everywhere and they are attracted to human
