Diabetes type 1 is a social problem all over the world. It is an autoimmune disease that people who have been diagnosed are forced to live with throughout their lives. JDRF writes an article about the revolutionary discovery of an artificial pancreas which could benefit many people with diabetes type 1 who now could feel less anxious about their blood sugars and what complications that might follow (2016). According to Trevino, science is defined as a method of collecting and verifying observed facts that contributes to our (the people in society) knowledge of them (2015).
Structural functionalism is defined as a macro perspective, focusing on how society maintains structure. In this case the focus is on the social structure of the scientists (Trevino 2015). The article describes the artificial pancreas as a discovery made by leading endocrinologists, mathematicians, and engineers at top research institutions in the U.S. and Europe (2016). By introducing the artificial pancreas many people with the diagnose are hopeful for the future and expects a less complicated way of dealing with their disease. Nevertheless, the device is not fully available for all patients. Due to its cost, it will be hard for it to reach out to all groups of society. To solve the problem and increase the use of treatment for a bigger group it comes back to the inequalities in society and the costs of health care. The US has the most expensive health care system and some of the poorest health outcomes. To allow more people to afford health insurance as well as health care, the costs for them must be reduced. According to Trevino, politicians need to be more involved in the reform of the health care system (2015).
