Patti, I agree that successful leaders play a key role in determining the value of the health care organization. Successful leaders can inspire the team to work hard towards achieving organizational mission. Through their actions, leaders also can demonstrate the core value of the organization and motivate staff to provide high-quality service to customers. As it is mentioned in the text Mission, vision, and value statements of the organization are tools for employees to improve their overall performance, and these statements are only useful when implemented and practiced in day to day function of the organization. Which is possible when employees not only understand but adopt organizational value and mold their actions according to them.
The Public Health field is constantly changing and adapting to a new environment and changes that are occurring worldwide. Many of the Leadership and Management Skill trends that are affecting Public Health are the demographic shifts that are occurring in the US population. Accountability in relation to public responsiveness, assessing emerging health risks, and changes in health services delivery and financing, as well as leadership geared towards being collective and with less stress being place on the individual, are various trends that are affecting different forms of management. Within this paper, I will be examining collective leadership and how that will affect work at the individual level. The leadership competency for development I chose to work on is Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment. I chose this competency because I have very little knowledge of the healthcare environment and feel it would greatly benefit me to broaden my knowledge in this area since I would like to work with the older population as a care manager/geriatric care manager type role in the near future.
The vision, mission statement, and the company values help direct the company’s strategic plan. The vision statement provides the direction the company desires to head. By knowing where the organization wants to be in the future the strategic plan will be developed accordingly to the desired outcome. The mission statement tells the potential customers what the organization is all about and creates a snap shot of the organizational values. The health care field needs leaders to promote what is the right things to do in healthcare thus enhance the productivity of care delivery in a qualifying cost-effective way. Leaders are skilled with brilliance, innovation for change and possess the vision to determine what needs to be done as well as empower people to strive for change and promote a healthier system for that which is of concern. Transformational style leaders are preferred in the new design of healthcare delivery systems today. Transformational Leadership inspires followers and acts as role models, creating acceptance of the mission and purpose of the team (as cited in Lievens, & Vlerick, 2014).

Within many companies and businesses there are often huge dilemmas with the leadership aspect of the organization. This skill of leadership should be found among managers who have to rely messages and to lead individuals in the right direction. Communication problems, organizational management concerns, and motivational issues are among the few that arise due to the lack of professionalism. (Core Competencies for a Healthcare Administrator, 2016) One company in particular that influenced my outlook on how to be a competent and an efficient employee was the Spine Institute. Along with completing tasks and being an overall successful company, there were also a lot of components that caused issues and problems within the workplace. Most healthcare employees are trained professionals who are capable of managing a healthcare organization, providing proper patient care and even maintaining professionalism when no one is looking. (Elevate Admins, 2016) In order for a healthcare business to be successful, all healthcare employees need to acquire and need to apply proper communication skills, necessary organizational management skills, and must be able to motivate their employees and each other at all times in order to be an exceptional leader.

The 21st century with various emerging health related problems there is widespread recognition that the challenges posed by obesity, alcohol, smoking, climate change issues etc requires solution from public health approaches where the role of leadership remains intact in tackling the public health challenges of the 21st century (Pittman, 2013). This would need a leader as such who is a combination of administrative excellence with strong sense of professional welfare and builds enduring greatness through a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will for awareness rising to encourage and to initiate public health activities (Day et al., 2012).
The healthcare industry is experiencing unprecedented change generated by multiple external forces including “Obamacare,” electronic medical records, an aging population, and mergers and acquisitions (Goretsky, 2012). These unprecedented changes along with the needs of the patients, staff and operations place significant demands on healthcare leaders. In most cases, physician leaders receive little to no leadership training in medical school resulting in a need for organizations to provide leadership learning to address current and future strategic and operational issues.
