The book The thief of always by Clive Barker is a fable about a young boy who bored out of his mind and finds the Holiday House, the dream house and the house of illusions that the evil Mr.Hood snatches away time. Little details like the illustrations make a giant difference on the plot of this fable. Barker does many important stuff with the illustrations in the story such as foreshadowing, creating suspense, and symbolism.

Barker emphasizes the details in the illustrations to foreshadow. Barker uses illustrations to foreshadow what is going to happen to Lulu. When Harvey is about to leave the house Lulu shows up and gives him a present that is three cold and wet objects that are the figures he lost in the lake. ( 98 )

This could mean that the Hood-House is sending a message. This message is that the Hood-House knows what Harvey is thinking because when somebody is smiling it means they did something mischievous. This was very important in the book because it makes you pay attention to the words instead of blindly reading the chapter.

Barker creates suspense using illustrations by making you wonder and then build suspense by making you pay attention to the book. Barker makes you wonder and wait about Marr. This illustration is a person who is disappearing and melting onto the floor into nothingness when Harvey was letting Mrs.Griffin out of the wood box. (83)
This illustration of a person melting and her eyeballs drooping down and she is melting. There are also characteristics of a human like the face and hair structure. This makes you think that this is Mrs.Griffin after Harvey released her. Barker makes you read the book and wait until this section in the book shows up before you realize this is actually Marr. Barker makes you wait about what the hand sticking out of the ground is. Harvey has finally beat the Hood-House by combining all of the seasons and wrecking the house. This paragraph shows that Barker spent a lot of time putting details into his illustrations was very important because they created lots of suspense and force you to pay attention to the illustrations.

Barker sends more humor through his illustrations than his words. The christmas tree sends a message but it also has some humor in it. This illustration is a christmas tree when Harvey wished for a christmas and he got one. (56)
