However, conflict resolution can also often generate positive results for the team. Conflict management skills remain in demand; conflict may be managed successfully by reaching an agreement that satisfies the needs of both the individual(s) and the team as a whole

People work in groups or teams everyday whether in their career, education, political organization, church, or any other social setting. Conflict while working in teams or groups is inevitable. When taking people of different backgrounds, personalities, moral, and ethical beliefs and putting them together in a group, conflict will arise. The key to achieving your team goals is to construct and conquer your goals with keeping the greater good of the team in mind. Conflict as it arises should be combated and abated through swift and thorough resolution techniques. When dealt with properly conflict resolution can give rise to a cohesive and productive team.

Teams are an integral component of organizational success. They take on many forms and functions and can have various structures. Teams also conduct a wide variety of projects with goals of innovation or mitigation. An example, from my experience, of a project that required the execution from a team was the establishment of a finished goods inventory program within a paper manufacturing company. A project of this magnitude required that a diverse and multifaceted team be assembled.

Another research study examined the dynamics of different groups and how conflict can be studied by understanding these dynamics. Groups that adapt a cooperative style to functioning together view conflict as a common issue that needs to be addressed as a group. (Somech et al, 2009) On the other hand, groups that chose a more competitive approach tend to perceive conflict as a conflict of interest where one member's personal interests and goals may have a significant distance from the rest of the group. Teams where individuals are cooperative view conflict resolution as more beneficial to the entire group and understands that this will allow the group to perform well and complete it tasks. However, in order for groups to be cooperative, individual members need to share the same perspective and resonate with a strong team identity. (Somech et al, 2008) It is only when members of the group have a strong sense of team identity are they able to perceive conflicts as a mutual problem that needs to be resolved to benefit the team. Individuals will need to set aside differences in opinions and interests and construct resolutions that would positively affect the group.

Realizing that a group can become a high performance team is important. Accomplishing this goal is invaluable, advantageous and profitable. Once able to operate from a group to the high performing team is a great step into preparation into the big business world. Leaders and members must also realize not only how to accomplish this but that some problems will and can arise from different demographic characteristics and cultural diversity. That is if one is in such a group, which the probability would be quite high.

Teamwork is a key element for having a successful and efficient team. Differences like a male versus a female’s perspective, race, culture, and even social or economic status are viewpoints that give all in the team a bigger picture of the different issues they may need to consider when coming to a conclusion about how best to achieve their goal. Though this style is thought of as the best route for teams to use, it is also one of the most difficult. Even a person who has a natural talent or personality that promotes this style of conflict management has to practice to be effective using this style in a team setting. A person cannot be judgmental and must be sure not to take anything said personally. This is something that most if not all of the team members must have an awareness of. All team members have to feel comfortable with the results and with what was given up from their own personal point of view to arrive at the team’s decision. This style is also very demanding so it requires a good amount of patience. Depending on how quick a decision is needed it is not always possible for a team to achieve and some in the team may not believe that their best interests were achieved.

The dynamics of a team relies heavily on the interaction of team members during times of conflict not just during times of agreement. Often groups seek to achieve a cohesive relationship in an effort to unite the team towards its goals. Group members can make the mistake of subverting conflict in an attempt to maintain this team unity. In many aspects of our life, it is pervasive to work in a team. No matter in company, school, or another type of team it is necessary to be a part of a team and to achieve a team goal by corporations. In any business it is inevitable that employees will be working in teams. A work team is defined as an organized group, committed to the individuals within the group, whose members share the same intent of accomplishing a common goal. Businesses use teams because they can often achieve more than individuals, they can support each other, they can bounce ideas off each other, and they can creatively brainstorm together. Despite the recognizable proficiency of the use of teams in business, there is also an increase in the likelihood of conflict occurring due to the presence of overall differences among members of the team.
