I found the reference for the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) through another source I was using. The website of this organization defines their mission as promoting health for every individual and to serve the public in educating them about the interactions between humans and their environment. Each physician at AAEM have either earned an MD or DO and specialize in environmental medicine. The work they have done in regards to GMO food’s is beyond anything I could have done myself. They have the funding, the knowledge, and the care to find out the effects of genetically engineered foods within the environment and the human body. I plan to use the research from this group to show that there is enough evidence to show probable harm may occur among humans when consuming GMO foods.

This article has opened my eyes and revealed my ignorance of how unmindful of what I have eaten for years. I was very alarmed by many of the things I have learned in this article. After learning the side-effect of GM food, I was certainly concerned for our health. Moreover, learning that the biotech company’s strong stand in advocate of GM products as well as the United States governments and the Food and Drug administration (FDA) cover up of serious safety issues of GM highly disturbed me.

Genetically engineered food has strong advocates and harsh critics.” Genetically modified organisms can be found in most conventional foods processed in the United States, and genetic modification of crops is extremely common on classic Minnesota farms. Crops such as corn and soybeans or even papaya and zucchini are viable for genetic modification. In fact, the definition of (GMO) as reported by Alex K. Rich and Tom Warhol, authors of “Genetically Modified Foods: An Overview,” is, “food in which, at some point during the production process molecules and proteins are chemically altered to give the food more nutrients, a better appearance, and a longer shelf life.” As a matter of fact, a majority of all the foods found at the grocery store are genetically altered. However, many people do not know what genetic modification really is, or that the idea has been around for many years. GMOs are used to control pests and weeds. Therefore, through changing the genetic makeup of the plant, modifications allow for advancements of new technologies that account for the applicability of specific chemicals, as opposed to dated Non-GMO farming techniques.
