The Attack On Pearl Harbor

Introduction. I chose this battle because I had been hearing about the attack on Pearl Harbor, but I did not know much about it. This paper talks about the countries that fought in this battle, where the battle was fought, what the geography was like during the battle, what the weather was like, what happened during this battle, how many casualties occurred, other things I learned about the battle, who won the battle, and how the battle was important to WWII.

On December 7, 1941 Japan bombed the United States at Pearl Harbor. The bombing of Pearl Harbor lasted very short than what you would expect which was only one day. Before Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, they started war with different nations that were around them. They did this to get the other nation’s materials, for an example oil, lumber, and coal. Japan was foolish for attacking the United States during WWII at Pearl Harbor; their motive was to take over the islands that the United States owned to become more powerful , in contempt of the end the Japanese lost and their cities were destroyed.

The attack on Pearl Harbour, which occurred on the 7th of December 1941, held great significance during World War Two. The destroying of the United Sates naval base and the horrific aggression shown by the Japanese changed not only many American opinions, but the whole of World War Two. Pearl Harbor occurred in the morning December 7th of 1941, which was a Sunday. There were six carriers with 423 Japanese fighter planes that attack Pearl Harbor. The Japanese attack in several waves, the first wave was 183 Japanese planes that took off 230 miles north of Oahu and were heading to Pearl Harbor. When these planes took off, at 7:02 a.m., a short radar station detected the planes and then contacted a junior officer who said it was American B-17 that was expected from the U.S. west coast. Not only was the attack on Pearl Harbor a mistake on Japan’s part, but had it not happened, the axis powers would have won world war II. The Japanese attack, without the full backing of its nation’s power lead to a less than devastating effect on the American Naval forces. The declaration of war on Japan, lead to Germany declaring war on America, directly lead to America giving full support to the European war and further declining the Nazi power leading to its ultimate defeat.

It was the Japanese that launched a surprise torpedo attack on December 7th of 1941 against American Naval base at Pearl Harbor, which was located in Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. In just two hours, the Japanese flew hundreds of fighter planes destroying almost twenty American naval vessels; including eight ships and over two hundred planes, and killing off over two thousands soldiers and sailors. After this barrage, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. Only three days later, Japan’s allies, Germany and Italy also declared war on the U.S. It was this attack that led us into World War II.

On December 7, 1941 the Japanese propelled a surprise destroy assault on the U.S. Naval Base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. At a young hour in the morning on December 7, there was near to 360 Japanese planes assaulted around 33 American ships which were requests of Vice-Admiral Chuichi Nagumo. America maintained a loss of 170 flying machines that morning and additionally 18 boats. Three thousand seven hundred Americans lost their lives in one day yet.

The attack on Pearl Harbor changed the lives of Americans all over the country. To help make supplies for war, women had to get jobs as welders and electricians in defense plants. People used their radios to get reports on the fighting overseas(The U.S.). Most Americans first heard about the attack on Pearl Harbor through the radio. A radio station in Pittsburgh provided an eyewitness account. "We have witnessed this morning the attack of Pearl Harbor and a severe bombing of Pearl Harbor by army planes, undoubtedly Japanese" (Reinhardt). Footage of the Pearl Harbor attack was not released by the government for a year after the attack. In 1943 officials reversed course based on fears of waning civilian morale and allowed the release of films that showed the real terrors of war. Their hope was to shock Americans into strengthening their commitment to the war effort(Tuttle).

Throughout history, many major events have occurred and they have changed the world and its countries as we know them today. One of the major events that has happened and is known internationally, is the second World War, a confrontation mainly between Germany, Italy, and Japan in the axis side, and Great Britain, France and the Soviet Union in the allies side, which had many more countries involved. Even though those were the major countries involved at the beginning, one major turning point in war was when the United States was brought into war, which probably changed how the war ended by American intervention. The attack on Pearl Harbor is what mainly triggered the action into being involved at war from the U.S. (Unfinished Nation, p612), and from that point on, the Japanese were treated very different, with discrimination and exclusion for many years (Identification Records, p1), and many concentration camps were created to maintain control over the Japanese outside and inside of the United States (Enemy Aliens, p1).

Only one day after, December 8, the United States Congress declared war on the Empire of Japan, sparking our involvement in World War Two. Only a couple years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, America was already on its way to creating the atomic bomb. By July of 1945, America was ready to test its first bomb and was successful.
