We are prepared for the arrival of the monster in many different ways, before he is created we know the monster is going to be a repulsive figure of a human being, but the reader is still intrigued into reading further, and because of Shelley's descriptive language we already feel disgust towards victors creation, and in doing so, we our-selves become just as callous as those people in the book that neglect Frankenstein's monster.

But you have to ask the question, if you were there, what would you have done? This act of disregard would emotionally scar the monster, and remembers this for the rest of his short life, "No father had watched my infant days". After this, the monster disappears into the wilderness, probably on a voyage of discovery. It's in this part of the story Victor gets back in touch with his family while recovering from a serious illness, but during this period the Monster retires to the forest, the monster must be feeling extreme pain and anguish, being deserted the only person which can relate to a father figure. The reader feels great sympathy towards the monster at this point, as he starts to show some natural childish traits, for example discovering new things like, you shouldn't play with fire "I thrust my hand into the live embers, but quickly drew it back with a cry of pain" Everything is new to the monster at this point; even blinking is new, which is something that is connected with a new-born baby. "…by opening my eyes…the light poured in upon me again", and the monster still has no real sense of being "who was I? What was I?"

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley has a simple origin, compared to other stories. While stories such as It by Stephen king started a several year process of creation, Frankenstein began simply as a campfire story Mary Shelley shared with her writer friends one evening. Although the origins of this novel are fairly simple, it provides an in depth psychological perspective on the darker side of human psyche through the shifting first person perspective. Usually these darker aspects are associated with the character’s personal struggles, but one specific theme in all the characters. The theme of obsession has been consistent and the central focus of the three main characters Victor, the creature, and Robert. With this central theme in mind the author, Mary Shelley shows that obsession leads to the characters suffering negative psychological and physical effects, as well as impair their decision making. This is depicted through the decline of physical and mental health through Victor’s struggles with his obsessions with knowledge and justice.
Throughout the novel Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley, the creature is subjected to countless acts of violence and rejection. For a monster to develop, one must have been formerly exploited either by an individual or their society. The creature is not only a physical product of science, but his atrocious behavior is also an explicit result of Victor’s actions toward him. The creature was not born a monster, but slowly morphed into one as he experiences violence and rejection from his society.

Much of the interactions between characters, and characteristics of the characters have been based on events which have occurred in Shelley's own life, or they represent what she believes is important. Elizabeth is shown as a stereotypical woman of the time, who is also very powerless. The monster is depicted as being both beautiful and ugly, and someone who the reader feels sympathetic towards. Should one feel sympathy for a murderer? If no, then consider the creature from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. In the book, Victor creates a being and gives the creature life. This creature then goes on to kill a majority of Victor’s family and friends directly and indirectly. However, this could have been prevented if Victor would have been there for the creature, so that the creature would not have been outcast for society. One sympathizes with the creature because Victor left it to learn by itself, and therefore it had no one to help it. Although, one may sympathize more with Victor because the creature he creates ends up killing a lot of his friend and family. The creature deserves more sympathy than Victor because the creature is innocent in its ways.

The novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, is a story about how important having a family is to some, but also judging someone based on their appearance. Victor Frankenstein starts the novel by describing his childhood with his loving and supportive family. Family is very important to him because he did not have many friends growing up. While Frankenstein is away at school he starts to become very depressed and you see his attitude towards his family and his life change. Being away at school, he creates a “monster” by using different pieces of corpses and that becomes the only thing that matters to him until he sees how hideous it is. He immediately hates his creation just because of how he looks. Frankenstein begins to abandon everyone and thing in his life because of his obsession with the idea of glory and science, causing the novel to go from Romanticism to Gothic. The “monster” finds a family living in a cottage, by watching all winter he learns how a family should love and accept others.
