According to Georgia’s declaration of causes of secession they felt that the “… power in the Federal Government have striven to deprive us of an equal enjoyment of the common Territories of the Republic....” The state of Mississippi stated, “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery … We follow their footsteps. We embrace the alternative of separation; … we resolve to maintain our rights with the full consciousness of the justice of our course, and the undoubting belief of our ability to maintain it.” Texas declaration of causes said that, “Texas abandoned her separate national existence and consented to become one of the Confederated States to promote her welfare, insure domestic tranquillity and secure more substantially the blessings of peace and liberty to her people.” Later on the remaining four southern states, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, joined the Confederates.

On March 4, 1861, Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as president of the United States. In his inaugural speech, he declared that the Constitution was a more perfect union than the earlier Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, and that this was a binding contract. He said he didn’t have any plans to invade the southern states, but that he would use force to maintain possession of federal property.

The Civil War began on April 12, 1861, in Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor after the Confederate artillery struck the Fort (“Florida’s Role in the Civil War”). After President Lincoln became the President of the United States, eleven states formed as Confederate states to separate themselves from the United States. The reason why those states separated from the United States was that they did not agree with President Lincoln’s decision to try to end all slavery. The Confederate states wanted to keep slavery going. Those eleven states were Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Virginia, and North and South Carolina. The rest of the United States were called the Union, even though there were some people that lived within the Confederate States that did not condone slavery and there were some people who lived in the Union states who did condone slavery. The United States of America divided by different beliefs and ideas in 1861. Therefore, states were demanding to split up America because of the vast different beliefs. The southern states of The United States formed “Confederate States” because of the desire of central power and state’s rights. They believed that the northern states were trying to take away southern values and society (Blight, p.43). The Confederate states consisted of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Georgia, Virginia, and Louisiana.

So, Texas decided to leave the United States. Sam Houston, the governor of Texas did not support Texas’s Decision for leaving the United States. He thought that there was no way that the Confederates would win, so Sam Houston refuse to pledge to the Confederates, resulting in his resignation. Why would the Texans fight a war that their own governor didn't believe in? Texans fought in the Civil War to protect state rights, keep slavery, and they also fought for the love of Texas.
