Living Case Study: Strategy Edition GUIDED STUDY OF WERNER ENTERPRISES, INC. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This study examines the current operations of Werner Enterprises, Inc. In doing so, the study surveys the history, guiding stars, external environment, internal environment, and the current strategies that Werner has employed. This study also gives recommendations for new strategies going forward, as well as which strategies should be continued. A plan for how these strategies will be implemented and evaluated follows. Werner’s guiding stars include their mission statement, vision statement, and guiding principles. Each of these demonstrate the importance that Werner places on relationships. These guiding stars give an idea of the business that Werner engages in, and what their values and goals are. However, there are many ways in which these statements can be improved. A more descriptive view of where the company is now, where they would like to be in the future, and how they intend to get there will be beneficial to the company, its employees, and its customers. Werner’s external environment includes the following opportunities and threats. The industry is in the sinking market as sales are declining for the last two years. Gilcrist must avoid re-establishing the company in a sinking market, but to make innovation and change. She should invest her marketing budget into the power boat segment of the industry and expand the company or even move the company to a different location. The challenge for Gilcrist will be to stimulate employee creativity and tolerance for change due to her new directorship as president.
Their short term objectives would be increasing sales. The vision would centre around employee co-ownership with the happiness of partners as the ultimate purpose. The mission is the satisfaction of employees. Finally, the value would be to represent the best possible choice, as a result of providing the best quality, trust and customer service.

After reading the chapter about Hanna Andersson, I noticed when the company discovered they had to continue to be competitive the Hanna Andersson company had to make a plan. Therefore, the company decided to promote from within to help lead the company (as cited in Principal of Management, Para 4). As well as, selling equity to gain capital in an effort to continue towards improving the business (para 5). Similarly, when having trouble staying competitive the Hanna Andersson company began selling product online (para 7). In addition, Hanna Andersson designed and implemented distribution through retail to facilitate the transformation of the company (para 7). While meeting the goals of the investors Hanna Andersson company held the same CEO that helped preserve the direction of the company that benefit the business goals and values (para 7). Ultimately, the planning when making changes or expanding to stay competitive helped Hanna Andersson reach a new goal without taking extraordinary risks.
Deere & Company since the beginning has always aimed to support owners of their equipment and to make owners of any other equipment wish that they had purchased a Deere instead. Their approach to business has truly set themselves apart from their competition and has left a strong impression on both their consumers and their competition. The company’s objective is to enable business and operational success through integrated world class solutions and development by utilizing the organizational restructure of the Engineering and R&D departments. Having a centralized organization with a decentralized engineering department makes meeting the company objective quite difficult.
