Often, one of the most overlooked of the five senses is the ability to smell. Living things use it every day- from figuring out what the best scent is to eat the most delicious food to figuring out what perfume makes us the happiest (and potentially, the most attractive to others). However, smell is more than just the stench someone gives off. In fact, odor can trigger a variety of emotions. To begin the discussion on the relationship between odor and emotion, one must define what an odor is. More than just a sense, smell consists of molecules that recognized by olfactory receptors and must have a specific concentration (Yantis, 2014). With much research, a relationship between memory and odor has existed and has led to broader findings about odor and other components. According to a 2009 study, a relationship between odor and mood exists (Croy et al., 2011). However, research done regarding odor and emotion is a fairly recent interest and has gained more attention over the last few years. According to the American Psychological Association, an emotion is a “complex pattern of changes, including physiological arousal, feelings, cognitive processes, and behavioral reactions, made in response to a situation perceived to be personally significant” (APA, n.d.).

1. Communication is the most important part to understanding and being understood. It is vital for our survival and used in every day of our lives, from the moment we are born. Talking, shouting, crying, reading, writing, seeing, listening, using body language, expressions (e.g. smiling, frowning), gestures and signs are just some of the means by which we communicate.

Looking at this chapter when Mitch talks about his brother Peter, he expresses that he had a good childhood with his brother but growing up they drifted away from each other. Family is important because if we didn’t have family we wouldn’t know what friendship was. We can learn lessons from family about how people really are in the world. Family love is something everyone needs to make it through life. Family can influence us to do great things in life but also show us that there are going to be bad people throughout life.

Although many books have been written about communication and connection in relationships, there has been a book that addresses precisely this wonderful process as has James C. Petersen in his book: Why Don’t We Listen Better? And it is precisely the way in which the parts he divided the book that takes the reader to a better understanding of what the personal relationships connections through communications are concerned.

Hochschild’s discussion of feelings allows us to understand how our feeling provides us with the bearings and guidance we need to reach a sense of both subjectivity and objectivity. The next question is: what do we do with this knowledge? According to Hochschild, we need to manage our feeling, either by surface or deep acting, in order to manage our display of feeling in the world. Hochschild (2003, p. 35) is convinced that all of us do a certain amount of acting, that self is performed. In understanding how surface and deep acting is accomplished, and in explaining its connection to emotion, Hochschild used the work of Stanislavski (1965), who is known as the father of ‘method acting’.

Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” interested me; in being the first time I analyzed my communication forms. I communicate differently when I speak since I’m introverted, however when writing I’m solo and have the time to reflect, furthmore expressing my thoughts. In retrospect growing up, I conclude I was the one who “listened”, whereas my father “talked”. In the book Where Good Ideas Come From by Steven Johnson, he shows his readers that great ideas come from ordinary involvement and he uses the history of inventions/innovations to back up his theories. Steven Johnson’s writing is meant to explain how to achieve good ideas and what we can do to advance the ingenuity of our environment. Throughout this piece of work, Johnson illustrates seven theories of innovation of how inventions happen, these consist of; The Adjacent Possible, Liquid Networks, The Slow Hunch, Serendipity, Error, Exaptation, and Platforms. Where Good Ideas Come From advises that in the end sincerity and connection may be more respected to innovation than to a full extent competitive humans.

The things I carry are largely determined from peoples or situations. Among the people that affect my emotions are teachers, my friends, my family, and people I hate but all together they are still people the emotions I have vary from them people I hate obviously make me angry to a point I scarcely know myself, friends make me happy because I know there is someone out there that I can actually talk and have fun with, my family well they give me nothing but pure happiness no strings attached because I love them with all of my heart I would do anything for them I would even give my life to them.
