History of the Internet Chances are you know someone right now that was alive before the internet was even in the works. In just thirty four years the internet has advanced further than anyone ever expected it to. The internet is everywhere and being in things such as computers, phones, tablets, televisions and many other pieces of technology, it has an endless amount of uses. Before the internet, news would not travel as fast and less things were known about the world and the people in it. During the early age of the computer, computers were expensive to produce and operate, and were separated by distance and purpose, forcing a single person who wanted to access multiple functions and information to physically travel to a site where multiple computers were located. The internet which in its early stage was known as ARPANET was created by the US Department of Defenses Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). The concept of ARPANET was first thought of in 1962 when a man by the name of J.C.R. Licklider who attended MIT wrote a series of memos in August 1962 discussing his "Galactic Network" concept. He imagined a world wide system, all of which was connected by computers where everyone could quickly access data and programs from any site at any time. His idea very was much like the Internet of the world we live in now. Licklider was the first head of the computer research program at ARPA, starting in October 1962. While at ARPA he convinced his successors, Bob Taylor,
J.C.R. Licklider first developed the idea of the Internet in a series of papers published in 1962. However, the infrastructure that would eventually become the Internet was developed by the United States government in the late Sixties. This network, called the ARPANET, sent its first bits of data in 1969. However, as the network got larger, the packets of data were becoming increasingly difficult for the network to handle. Therefore, protocols were developed to help facilitate smooth transfers of data. These evolved into TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), which are the basis on which the modern Internet runs. TCP/IP made it easy to integrate new networks, thus allowing for an increasing infrastructure on which the Internet
It is important to know the history of the internet. The internet is a worldwide network of computer systems that are connected to each other by cables (Howe, 2012). The internet first started out as a military experiment. In 1957, the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) was created by the United States department of Defense (Computer History Museum, 2004). The project was started after the Russians launched a satellite into space for communication reasons. The satellite was called SPUTNIK (Computer History Museum, 2004). It was rumored that President Eisenhower got worried and decided to get the United States to launch its own satellite. They recruited Dr. Joseph C. Licklider of MIT, was made head of the Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO)(Computer History Museum, 2004). Their purpose of the project was to focus on improving the military use of computer information.
The Internet influenced the United States more than anything else in the 20th century. The Internet first technically started in 1969, when the U.S. Defense Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency or ARPA connected networks at the University of California and the Stanford Research Institute (SRI). From there, just three years later the creation of the Email was born by Ray Tomlinson of BBN. With many other novelties of the Internet coming soon after, such as the Domain Name System (DNS) establishing .edu and .com, and the first web browser, World Wide Web by CERN. As the Internet flourished in the late 1990s it became more usable to the public and soon became routine to use, making great changes in society. The Internet was integrated
Over the course of the next twenty years it was mainly utilized by the United States military and government to communicate with each other during the “cold war” with the Soviet Union, and the allies of the United States. By 1982 the concept and use of the Internet had been reshaped by the Internet Protocol Suite (IPS). (CNN.org) The idea eventually evolved and was adapted by the United States in 1986, when the Internet Protocol Suite expanded and began to provide access to supercomputer sites for research and educational organizations. The internet further evolved by the mid-1990’s into the mass commercial use we see today, with many early use restrictions lifted. Since then the Internet has continued to expand and continues to advance. (Wikipedia.org)
The Internet was first used for the military and government, created by the US Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). At this time, mass producing the computer was too expensive to mass produce to the entire public. The idea of the Internet emerged in the early 1960s and finally became a success in 1969 when it finally launched; the first connection between two computers finally became a reality creating a new computer network (History of the Internet).
The internet was created more than 40 years ago. It was created on September 2, 1962 in L.A.. It was created by 2 UCLA computers ,and machines that were able to communicate with each other In its early days it was only used for communication during the Cold War. Sputnik , he very first satellite for the internet, was launched on December 4, 1957. One of the biggest factors to why the internet was created is ,because the U.S. feared one missile attack could destroy all telephone lines. The internet first message was sent in 1969. In 1969 only 4 computers were connected to the ARPA net, but it grew in the 1970s. The internet steadily became a public use in the 1980s. People started using it for communing with each other. The internet got worse and worse to use for research, so in 1992 researchers developed a program they called Mosaic. Mosaic was made to make browsing the internet safer and
The internet started as a project funded by the Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA), this agency is a branch of the military. Initially, the internet was used to connect the University of Utah with three other institutions in California. The reason for this connection was to make effective use of the very expensive computers that these institutions housed by having them share information, this network system came to be known as ARPANET. One of the first applications used through this network was Telnet, which allowed researchers to remotely control the computers connected to the ARPANET.
The early 1990s is when the modern day began. In 1992, and Oxford University computer scientists named Tim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web. This was a data sharing space that anyone with an internet connection can access. Not just government research centers and scientists with access to top of the of the line equipment. As the 1990’s continued, the Internet continued to globalize. In 1992, Erwise was the first successful Internet browser due to the graphical user interface software it supplied. Erwise paved the way for Mosaic and eventually Netscape which accounted for 90 percent of all internet browsing activity. As the Internet started to grow faster, companies such America Online and Compuserve offered Internet through a dial-up network connection. This allowed anyone with a home phone line access to the Internet. The Internet was now expanding into residential homes and was expanding globally. In 1994, the use of the internet was expanding by 2,500 percent a year. Entrepreneurs such as Jeff Bezos
They saw a great potential value of Internet in scientific and military field, and sharing the informations. J.C.R. Licklider of MIT was one of the visionary people. He’s the first one who proposed the global network. Then the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) took over the program of developing global network at late 1962 with MIT and University of California at Los Angeles. At 1965, they connected a Massachusetts’ computer with a California computer which was a big progress. Robert moved to DARPA and started his plan for ARPANET which was the real start of the Internet’s life. At 1969, during the Cold War, the program’s purpose changed to "to aid researchers in the process of sharing information, and not coincidentally to study how communications could be maintained in the event of nuclear attack". Fortunately, with the developed of Internet technique. It’s usage became wider. Like later the emergence of ARPANET include many usages such as file transfer, sent e-mail, and even online discuss. In 1973, APRA continued a program named “Internetting Project” for "to develop communication protocols which would allow networked computers to communicate transparently across multiple, linked packet networks". The development of Internet had never stopped. By 1980s, private could use Internet which we called “TCP/IP”, and it was funded by National
In October 1969 two teams of computer scientists, linked computers over telephone lines to operate as a single system. The U.S. military supported the research, hoping to get communications that would work even if part of the system were disabled or destroyed in a nuclear attack. Which turned into the genesis of the "Internet Age." In the 90s the Internet changed every aspect of the daily life. Anyone with a computer, telephone, and modem literally had a digital library at their fingers. As the 90's came to an end a new kind of technology was beginning (Malvasi, Mark G., Greene 1).
In everyday life of 2015 the internet is engrained into almost every fasit of daily life around the world. The internet provides people with the ability to obtain information almost instantly on just about anything. Information is free flowing on the intertnet. Once it is placed in a server is can be rerieved from another location from almost anywhere in the world that is connected to the internet. While it may seem to be a simple part of modern life, this was not always the case. The Internet is a rather new technogy of created in the 20th century. The Internet is the byproduct of the Advanced Reasearch Project Agency Network (ARPANET). If you were to look though history textbooks it would be a painstaking experence to look for anything on the ARPANET. Very few people when asked about the ARPANET even know what it
The concept of the Internet was developed in the late 1950s while the United States was in the midst of the Cold War with the Soviet Union. At that time, the U.S. Department of Defense needed a computer network that wouldn’t be disrupted
The first record of any type of social interaction on the internet, through networking, was in August of 1962. It was actually a series of memos from J.C.R. Licklider, which discussed his “Galactic Network”. This was a vision that all computers would be globally connected so that everyone could access programs and data from anywhere. J.C.R. was the first head of the computer research team at DARPA. In 1965, the first computers, a TX-2 and a Q-32, were connected from Massachusetts to California using a low speed dial-up telephone line. This was the first connection of two computers to exchange information and run the same programs. This concept turned into a large program, which in turn, was called “ARPANET”. This “ARPANET” is what has lead us to today’s internet.
The internet is arguably one of the greatest human inventions of all time. We have never been able to exchange and have access to such a large amount of information in all of human history. Some even say a child in developing Africa has access to more information now than the president of the United States 20 years ago. That is testament to how far we have come in the digital age. The question then is how do we keep track of some much data? And furthermore how can we ever find what we are looking in all of that information. Search engines are great tools that help us in finding this information. Domain names are just as important.
The arrival of the internet initiated a new age in which people had the ability to create their own community. The universality of it allowed people from all across the globe to easily interact with each other which meant it was no longer necessary to live in proximity with one another in order to maintain contact and make friends. One of the applications that emerged as a result of the internet age was YouTube. YouTube allowed people to be able to view and hear others without having to be in vicinity of them. It quickly became a linking force between people and allowed them to expand beyond their social bubble which provided opportunities for them to have contact with people who live far away. The years following its launch have only strengthened its position as a source of connection between people as it is increasingly used as a platform to share one’s life.
