The U.S. was supposed to be the world’s new swing oil producer, able to nimbly open and close the taps in response to market forces, thanks to its bounty of shale fields.” In the past a barrel of oil has been one hundred dollars, recently it has dropped to thirty dollars. Though some wells can be profitable at low prices it puts a serious strain on the oil industry as explained in this article. In the beginning of the article we learn that prices are dropping, and many independent companies are to financially involved forced to let many workers go. U.S. fracking equipment is idle making it very hard to start fracking when over half of the equipment ,sixty percent, is completely idol. “The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that
Another reason why the United States must make fracking illegal is because it can have a negative effect on water sources. During fracking, the fluid, which consists of over 596 toxic chemicals, is pumped into the ground, soon after, once all of the gas is extracted from the operation, some of that fluid stays deep underground, and becomes increasingly toxic as it comes picks up radioactivity, or other underground contaminants (White). These fluids can sink into aquifers and turn water into a noxious mix, even the water that comes back up is almost untreatable after coming in contact with these chemicals (Griswold). Although the dangers are well known, it is no surprise that water sources have already been contaminated due to inattentiveness.
Do you think fracking should be used to release oils and natural gases? I personally think fracking shouldn't be used to release oil and natural gas because of all the protentional dangers it might cause. The risk of fracking is very detrimental and can cause serious climate issues. The world is already dealing with enough problems with the climate, so if fracking was to be used to release oils and natural the issues may stack up and cause issues for future societies.Firstly, what is Fracking? Hydraulic fracturing, or what is known is fracking is a cost-saving process for drilling oil. The dangers of fracking can be contamination of groundwater, methane and air pollution, toxic chemical exposure, earthquakes, and many more issues that go along
How would you feel if you were told that you had cancer or another chronic illness...from the water you are drinking? Sadly, this actually can, and does, happen to people because of a process called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Though many believe fracking is the key to an independent energy source, it causes many problems such as: global warming, water contamination, bad air quality, and even earthquakes. Fracking should not be continuing and growing in usage in the United States.
For some of us the innovative method of hydraulic fracturing in the energy sector is a dream come true. To others, it is a nightmare. Often the word ‘fracking’ itself raises a lot of concerns, protests, and controversies. Environmentalists and the general public who are not aware of the facts and statistics about fracking, what’s called the bigger picture, often tend to think that fracking is a major concern and its impact on environment and in the sector of public health is disturbing. While it is the responsibility of the citizens to analyze and understand the reality of fracking, it is also the duty of the government to provide exact facts and figures so that it
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, does many things to improve people’s lives as well as the economy. If fracking were to be banned nationwide, hundreds of thousands of people would be out of work. That is hundreds of thousands of families that would financially struggle because liberals simply do not understand basic fracking techniques. Putting a ban on fracking would also be hurtful to the economy in many ways. Obviously, people out of work hurts the economy. Being energy independent would be very beneficial towards the economy but this goal can never achieved without natural gas.
Hydraulic fracturing is harmful to the environment and people. I believe there are alternative methods that are safer. In order to protect the environment and the population, precautions need to be implemented to reduce the damaging effects of fracking. The government needs to use other methods to change the current process of hydraulic fracturing.
Insight, IHS Global. "The economic and employment contributions of shale gas in the United States." Prepared for America’s Natural Gas Alliance by IHS Global Insight (USA), Washington, DC: America’s Natural Gas Alliance (2011).
what this is talking about how fracking is good and bad.Toxic substances are in fracking fluid and waste-water as well as air pollution from trucks. equipment and the wells themselves along with an increasing number of CNG fueling stations opening throughout the country.Just as plants do today, those living millions of years ago converted the sun's light energy into food (chemical) energy through the process of photosynthesis. Natural gas is most widely used in the industrial and manufacturing sectors chemicals, metals, glass and food processing, among others with its use to heat and power our nation’s homes and businesses expanding rapidly. have been linked to a variety of negative health effects. although fracking creates jobs for people and
Fracking is a controversial topic of discussion for a majority of people. Fracking is also known as hydraulic fracturing which is a method of extracting natural gas stored in shale rock. It involves forcing rock to fracture by pumping millions of liters of water and chemicals at extremely high pressure into the ground. The technique of fracking has been known since the 1940’s. Prices of natural gas and other fuels are rising steadily. Fracking has been used more than a million times in the USA alone.
For over half a century, hydraulic fracturing, otherwise known as fracking, has been an innovative industry used to remove oil and natural gas buried underground. Established in 1947, fracking allowed industries to expand and develop new technologies to further environmental safety and the discovery of natural gas. Fracking releases natural gas trapped deep in shale underground. "What is Fracking?" states "Fracking was first introduced in 1947; however, wasn't commercially used until 1999 with Barnett Shale" (1). This industry sparks controversy all over the nation and worldwide. The public protests the environmental safety and regulations, and the fact corporations are not required to release the chemicals being used to drill the shale.
Fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is drifted at the rock to relapse the gas inside.
Fracking is a controversial subject as it has pros and cons depending on what people look at and whose side one ison when it comes to the end goal, will it be power, or the environment for the world and around the area of the drill? There are more cons however with fracking than there are pros as it is one of the most harmful things we have today ruining peoples homes and living sources.
One of the immense drawbacks of hydrofracturing is the amount of water used up in the process and the wastewater generated. Many states, such as California, are currently stuck in a serious drought and need all the water they can get. However, fracking takes up enormous amounts of water as "it can take up to 4 million gallons of water to fracture a horizontally drilled shale well" (Ohio Department of Natural Resources), water that could be purified and given to the people in need. After up to 4 million gallons of water are used up in a single fracking process, "California[‘s] oil wells return five gallons of "produced water," often laced with contaminants such as boron, ammonia, and organic compounds, for every barrel of oil" (Environment California).
Fracking will create a new industry for people to work in. Many people who were previously unemployed will get jobs. This will decrease unemployment and in turn decrease crime.
This essay is related to the process of Fracking and its implications on the Karoo. It will provide a background on exactly what Fracking is and how the process is carried out and also how and to what extent the process will affect the Karoo. Knowledge gained from the environmental economics course will be used and various factors and arguments will be weighed and taken into consideration with the goal aimed at reaching an evidence based decision as to whether Fracking should or should not be allowed in the Karoo.
