Since the inception of the United States of America 250 years ago, our government has enacted a practice of lies and deceit that keep its citizens in the dark. Matters such as false allegations that result in long standing wars, financial misuse and abuse, secret alliances that serve the government agenda's, and the altering of history affect not only the US citizens, it affects the global population as a whole. This deception has resulted in mistrust of the US Government as people question what our government is up to and what they are seeking to gain. In order to earn the public's trust, the United States Government needs to be transparent with its citizens, giving us the information whether it's positive or negative instead of allowing …show more content…
During the 2018 Senate budget accountability meeting, Senator Bernie Sanders says, “since 1995 Boeing, Lockheed Martin and United Technologies have paid nearly $3 billion in fines or related settlements for fraud or misconduct- $3 billion collectively. Yet those three companies received about $800 billion of defense contracts over the past 18 years” (Senate). All of these companies are private defense companies that design and manufacture weapons for the Department of Defense if the money if followed. These defense companies have paid 0.375 percent in fines for fraud compared to the amount they were given by the Department of Defense over eighteen …show more content…
George W. Bush, the forty-third President of the United States, had a working relationship with one of Osama bin Laden’s brothers, Salem bin Laden, that started in 1978 and was available to the average American in 2016. The two men started a company called Arbusto Oil in Texas (Rodriguez). George H. W. Bush, the forty-first President of the United States, served as a senior advisor to the Carlyle Group, a global equity company that Osama bin Laden’s family had invested millions of dollars into, until the knowledge of how connected the Bush and bin Laden families are when he resigned from his position
When the topic of Homeland Security is introduced, the first thought that comes to mind is either 9/11 or the Transportation Security Administration, TSA for short. No matter the reference, most Americans know that Homeland Security has something to do with Terrorism. Until an actual attack occurs, or election season begins, the average person may never give any thought or credit to the Department of Homeland Security. Homeland Security goes far beyond terrorism and terrorism prevention. Homeland Security does not just encompass holding individuals up at airports for multiple hours to intentionally hinder passengers from catching their flight out of the Caribbean. Homeland Security is multiple levels of legislation; law and policy to prevent
“The Homeland Security Act of 2002 established the federal United States Department of Homeland Security. Its stated mission is to secure the nation against terrorist attacks, to protect against and respond to threats and to ensure safe and secure borders” (Andrew, C., & Walter, F., 2013). “In addition to reducing the nation’s vulnerability to terrorism, the act was also created minimize the damage and facilitate recovery from any attacks that may occur” (Homeland Security, Department of, 2017). Many people want protection from dangerous situations, but what’s the cost of protection.
The CIA, otherwise known as the Central Intelligence Agency, is a federal agency that is independent and has the responsibilities of providing the country of the United States with national security intelligence. The CIA is in charge of gathering information that is going on from other countries in order to help our own national security to become stronger, and to be able to protect the citizens of the United States better. However, what happens when the CIA tries to protect it’s citizens by screwing over other countries? What happens when the CIA is responsible for destroying other countries’ governments or placing leaders where we do not belong as a country to try and control politics that we should not even be involving ourselves in. While the CIA is meant to have good intentions for providing our country with national security, a lot of times the United States is responsible for meddling in affairs we never belonged in which cause harm, devastation, or death to the countries we force ourselves upon.
Lockheed Martin Corporation relies heavily on defense contracts from the U.S. Government. In fact, 84 percent of the company's net sales were made through being a prime contractor or subcontractor for the U.S. Government. These sales come from both the Department of Defense (DoD) and non-DoD agencies. The next largest area of revenue is from foreign governments that make up 15 percent of net sales. The remaining net sales come from commercial or other customer sales. A slow economy could cause decline or reprioritization of funding for the U.S. defense budget. This is also true for
For almost 200 years the American public viewed their government and its chief executive with virtual reverence. Presidents like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy were the embodiment of every principle and value set forth in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The events that occurred in Vietnam coupled with the Watergate scandal shocked the nation and irreparably damaged the publics’ view of politics and government activities. The release of the Pentagon papers
More than half of the citizens of the United States believe that the government has more power than they should. This amount is the highest it has ever been and it continues to grow each and every year. Trusting your government is crucial to building a solid country. If the United States government is becoming more untrustworthy, the country is sure to fall apart at its seams. The government has too much control over people because they are constantly watching with cameras and electronics, they can kidnap or kill you without anyone ever knowing what happened, and they intervene in citizens lives too often.
Information that could be beneficial or detrimental to the government needs to be released in order for society to make a just verdict. If the public will remain ignorant and uninformed about issues occurring in their homeland, they will not be able to fend for themselves. Transparency between the common-folk and the “higher-ups” will keep the country a safer place, due to the flow of knowledge between the two groups. Disseminating information that can make or break a certain situation that will affect the whole country, such as choosing the next president, will create a more advanced culture. Although knowing fact will not create world peace, it may solve internal conflicts, such as providing evidence for law cases, which are just as important. When a country has greater unity between its citizens and its executives, it is
Secondly, trusting our government and its leaders is another problem facing American in the 21st century. In “The Circle of Governments” Niccolo Machiavelli states, “As the human race increased, the necessity for uniting themselves for defense made itself felt; the better to attain this object they chose the strongest and most courageous from amongst themselves and placed him at their head promising to obey him.”(230). I take this statement to mean that ever since the beginning of time we have
The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) has been serving the U.S. armed forces and their dependents for many years. This military exclusive grocery chain is conveniently located on many bases, even having a store right here in Misawa. The Misawa commissary like many other grocery stores, sells various products including a large selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, regional foods, health and beauty supplies, wellness products, pet supplies, and cleaning supplies. Specialty departments at the Misawa commissary include a deli, meat department, fresh sushi, rotisserie, and bakery. All of these products are offered at prices usually equal to or cheaper than their off base counter parts.
As stated above, increasing access to a single form of electronic communication in 2016 is simply too limited an approach to do anything but hamper government. Additionally, the pursuit of such measures can often come at the expense of more effective and realistic methods of monitoring government action. Yglesias describes the FOIA process as a “very slow, highly adversarial process that is primarily useful to people with an ax to grind.” For a national government as unimaginably vast as the United States’, this is not a satisfactory primary tool for forcing disclosure. Yglesias proposes an alternative, however, in the form of “routine publication of what it knows.” This is certainly the more attractive option. The dynamic created by the FOIA process – where disclosure is a forced and drawn-out process – is not one to foster any sense of trust in
Could “ordinary Americans” accomplish a better a job of solving national problems than government officials? Study polls show that over the course of years the trust that Americans had in the government has slowly diminished. This change is the government’s fault. Someone doesn’t want to install their trust in somebody else who is not truthful. Americans should not trust government officials because they are not always truthful, treat citizens like criminals, and they are not doing anything that truly make America “better”.
Like in every relationship when things are not working, there is not one side to blame. The government and citizens are dancing a song that is no longer working, however, we keep dancing it. After the lecture on Government and Transparency, I realized that we as citizens are the ones who have the obligation to initiate these conversations because we, out of our lack of education about our rights and lack of initiative to change what was not acceptable within our communities, have enabled our governments to behave in ways that are unacceptable for the good and well-being of
First, I'm sure a good percentage of Americans would agree with what I'm saying. Why keep the US populace under wraps? Of course some stuff shouldn't be revealed, but
Everyday citizens often live unaware of their government’s inner workings. The knowing of political espionage is often too heavy of a subject to be inducted in conversation. True, prima facie, modest twists and turns of information may not be considered substantial, but this inconsideration leaves much to be uncontrolled. It is easy for political leaders to become power crazed, to not realize the massive implications that come of their actions. Only after all is said and done do the people actually realize their government is an opaque mask of deception. The Watergate Scandal substantially impacted Americans’ trust in their government.
Many Americans may think that the government is ideal because United States is “the land of the free” but the government is corrupt when looking at it from a different view point. Especially with the election coming, some americans have been observate of the government and its choices.
