The Rocking-Horse Winner

After reading all of the stories I selected “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence, and “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell.

In “The Rocking-Horse Winner” we are introduced to a woman who author D.H Lawrence states, “was beautiful, who started with all the advantages, yet she had no luck. She married for love, and the love turned to dust. She had bonny children, yet she felt they had been thrust upon her, and she could not love them.” When I dive into the psychology behind that statement, I come up with a thought that this beginning draws similarities to Lawrence’s own upbringing with his coal miner father and schoolteacher mother. There are people in this world who think that money can give them anything. This can be food to water to ease and joy. Consequently, they comprehend that money will have a life filled with ease and happiness. But what you don’t visualize is that building these thoughts will lead to an obsessive, joyless, person going the extra mile to get that cash. Why this is unacceptable I might add is where is the ease and the joy you endured obsessively to have? Suffering long hours so you have ease but have no time to rest. Tolerating days of labor to find happiness, but find yourself empty when you have nothing to show yourself for it. D.H. One of the emotional essentials of life is to be loved, and there are quite a few cases where material things can hinder receiving this much-needed love, the greatest culprit of all being money. D. H. Lawrence’s short story “The Rocking Horse Winner” tells of a boy, Paul, who desires love and affection from his mother, Hester, but she is so wrapped up in her concerns with money that she does not display any of this needed affection toward her son or any of her children. She has grown unloving and bitter due to her husband’s inability to meet her expectations, and she tells Paul his father is unlucky. Full of curiosity, Paul asks his mother what luck is, and she tells him, “‘It’s what causes you to have money. If you’re lucky you have money. That’s why it’s better to be born lucky than rich. If you’re rich, you may lose your money. But if you’re lucky, you will always get more money” (Lawrence, 2). Paul is quite intuitive and interprets that the only way he can finally obtain love from his mother is if he is lucky, much unlike his father. He proudly shares with his mother that he is lucky, but when she does not take his word seriously, he falls into a blinded rage as he madly rides his rocking horse, hoping it will take him to where the luck is, “‘Now take me to where there is luck!’” (3). It is often said that irony is the vital literary element to a story because it gives the story character. Whether it changes the mood, creates suspense, adds foreshadowing, engages the reader or something else, irony can do many things for a story.

D.H. Lawrence’s “The Rocking Horse Winner” is a captivating dive into the primitive psyche of a mentally disturbed child. Paul has an incredible gift that he desperately wishes his mother, Hester, will notice. Hester does not recognize Paul’s talents and he refuses to quit until she realizes what he can do for her. In Paul’s despair he exhausts his short life in an oedipal flurry of attempts at indulging his mother’s desires for money and sexual fulfilment.

“The author's work is known for its explorations of human nature and illustrates the nature of materialism” (Jones). Throughout life, we are constantly developing who we are as people. As we grow, we grasp hold of things we wish to portray ourselves with. In doing so, we create ourselves as humans. In this philosophy that has been developed, we base how we are raised in order to develop who we become in the long run. Over time, we receive knowledge pertaining to who we wish to become. In the story story “The Rocking Horse Winner” written by D. H. Lawrence, we are taken to a questionable development of humans in an equally disturbing adventure. In this short story, there are many messages that can be traced throughout.

No family is perfect, family is family, their love will always be there. At least till you fall off a rocking horse or hit by a few rocks. What I am referring to are these two short stories “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, and “The Rocking-Horse Winner’’ by D. H. Lawrence. Now for a brief overview of both these unsettling stories. "The Lottery" is a story of a small town basically consuming a member of its own community, It's like a smoothie of Dismay with figurative cannibalism, a bit of social commentary, a drop of peer pressure, with a twist of tradition. "The Rocking-Horse Winner" Is like a real delicious literary drama seasoned with a dash of social-commentary and a pinch of the supernatural. It follows the short and tragic life of a boy named Paul, who thinks he has remarkable luck after realizing he can predict racehorse winners by furiously riding his rocking horse until he reaches a trance-like state. Unfortunately, Paul's luck begins to kill him…Literally.

Eventually the luck, or in this case, the unluck, had to run out, and it did. Paul's continual confusion leads him to find his "luck" of know the winning horses. Paul is successful at reaching this goal and fulfilling his mother's definition of luck. The whole belief of his mother's was the basis for Paul's confusion. Good luck for Paul would be to see his mother happy. He knew that money was what made her happy. According to

Irony in stories can make it funnier, more interesting, or exciting to read. With some types of irony you can get that sort of suspense to the story. Irony can be in a views in a couple ways; you can have situational when you expect something to happen and the total opposite happens, then you have verbal irony, which is when someone says one thing, but something different is really meant. Then there is dramatic irony, which is when the audience knows but not the character does not. In “Good Country People” (O’Connor 116) there are two types of irony: Situational and dramatic irony. Some of the points of irony in the story are the names in the story including the title, the characters, and the central plot of the story.

With this quote from the short story, The Rocking Horse Winner, written by D.H. Lawrence, we can analyze and understand how the words of Paul’s mother, Hester, become the engine to the events that follow. The meanings of these words are key elements throughout the story. Our main character is Paul, and after a conversation with his mother about what is luck, the life of the characters take a positive turn economically. However, throughout the story we realize how damaging this was for Paul.

Paul desire his mother’s love more than anything. However he believes he needs to prove he is lucky. He struggles to prove that he is to make his mother happy. Paul wants his mother to love him more than anything. For Paul’s mother money equals luck, and this will gain her love. “There must be more money”(19). He hears these voices throughout the house. They hear these voices when hey are receiving items of joy, especially around Christmas time. The other children can hear the voices and so can the rocking horse Paul received. Even though they can hear the voices they do not say anything. This is due to the fact that every one is used to it so it would be like saying “we are breathing”(20). This led Paul to realizes that there family is in debt and he believes that in order for them to get out of this debt, he has to take action. This shows that he is willing to take the problem into his own hands because he believes that no one else can do anything about

Every person grows up with a different family dynamic. Some people grow up in houses of extreme poverty while others experience the life of wealth. Other children unfortunately grow up in abusive houses while some live with very living parents. These are all interesting dynamics, and something every child can relate to. The short story The Rocking Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence is aa story that describes a family who lives in poverty. This story is very interesting and often told in the form of third point of view. This story is about a younger boy who lives in a family with very little money. He often questions their lack of money and even goes as far as to try and help. His actions can also be seen as very noble and selfless. Unfortunately,

“Be still when you have nothing to say; when genuine passion moves you, say what you've got to say, and say it hot”(Lawrence). In 1926 D.H lawrence wrote one of his most famous stories, Rocking Horse Winner. This story is about a boy who gambles to make money that will make his mom happy. He ends up getting addicted to gambling, and this addiction ended up being extremely fatal to the boy. In life we go to the extreme to make the ones we love around us happy just like this little boy in the story did. This story betrays many important messages, three of the messages presented by D.H Lawrence are, economic problems, luck and unluck, and raising a child without damaging them.

Now on a side note; we must understand that money may be the source of many endearing problems and are sometimes resolved, but in many cases it can bring forth a greedy and deathly matter. For Instance, it is understood that paul it gambling throughout this story, and happened to be very lucky and wins large sums of money. He does this to essentially win money for his mother and prove that he is full of luck and will be of most certainly be of some purpose to his family. Gambling is not a silly subject and can lead to death. This is because money can take you or even make you something that you’ve always wanted. Once who have gotten your hands onto money you desire to have everything the world has to offer. Ultimately this leads to greed and could be the result of unhappiness and or even your death.
