Virtue Ethics
Virtue ethics is the theory which is centered on character rather than focused on actions. An individual's actions are the main element of ethical thinking rather than actions themselves (which is known as Deontology) or their consequences (which is known as consequentialism). A virtuous character would have to have virtuous traits. Some traits include courage, patience, and truthfulness. To understand virtue ethics one must first understand the virtues that make a good human being. A virtue is defined as a behavior showing high moral standards. For example, a common characteristic quality displaying a virtue would be honesty. If someone is honest, They are believed to never lie or cheat which

It can be applied to business, medicine, law enforcement, etc. Virtue ethics is the basis in which public service ( or private) base their rules on. For example, one should have integrity to take responsibility for their own work. This is considered a workplace virtue because in the workplace, there is such thing as proper etiquette. This establishes a right and wrong way to behave in a workplace environment. Virtue Ethics is a main component in this by setting a set of qualities, or virtues, deemed appropriate for a professional …show more content…
Not only this, but there is also a common burden of virtue ethics is that it does not produce a solid base of principles since having virtues is unable to guide or justify good actions. Virtue ethicists also face the reality that adequacy is a problem because a person does not need virtuous traits to perform a good action, not only that but if a virtuous person were to cause a wrongful action, it does not always have to mean that they are still not a virtuous person. To put this into perspective, if a murderer were to kill someone, and walk away from the crime, and he sees a homeless man and the murderer gives the homeless man a dollar, he has just performed a good deed. Or if lets say a priest was to curse in church, it does not mean he is not a virtuous person. Virtue ethics also is problematic because of its relativism. Its relativism is a big issue to this because every culture has different ways of defining virtues. Which means that everyone following virtue ethics would ultimately disagree with each other about
Virtue ethics is a theory of ethics in moral philosophy in which it emphasizes that the notion of virtue is key to a
Virtue ethics is a normative theory whose foundations were laid by Aristotle. This theory approaches normative ethics in substantially different ways than consequentialist and deontological theories. In this essay, I will contrast and compare virtue ethics to utilitarianism, ethical egoism, and Kantianism to demonstrate these differences. There is one fundamental aspect of virtue ethics that sets it apart from the other theories I will discuss. For the sake of brevity and to avoid redundancy, I will address it separately. This is the fundamental difference between acting ethically within utilitarianism, egoism, and Kantianism. And being ethical within virtue ethics. The other theories seek to define the ethics of actions while virtue ethics does not judge actions in any way. The other theories deal with how we should act, while virtue ethics determines how we should be.
Virtue ethics is one of the three major approaches in ethics. This approach of ethics emphasizes the virtues, or moral character, in contrast to other approaches which emphasizes duties or rules. Virtue ethics has three central concepts; virtue, practical wisdom, and eudemonia, however, these are often misunderstood. The three approaches of ethics are virtue ethics, consequentialist ethics, and deontology ethics. Each approach provides a different way to understanding ethics.
Lisa: Virtue ethics comes from the understanding that repeated actions over time create virtue. Constantly putting our soldiers into wars solely to prevent the spread of communism would create a culture that believes killing others in the name of capitalism is an ethically good virtue. Even right actions done for the wrong reasons can create a negative virtue in our soldiers. Becky: It’s hard to keep a promise of a good war to our soldiers if we enter into it for the wrong reasons.
Virtue ethics is a concept that is used in the process of moral decision making. It is dependent on the individuals themselves rather than on society, culture and religion. Aristotle was one of the main philosophers involved in virtue ethics. He was an advocate for virtue. Virtue ethics are associated with the type of person that one should become. It is solely concerned with human nature and morals. This essay will explore Aristotle’s conception of virtue. I will discuss Aristotle’s belief that virtue ethics are vital in achieving the ultimate goal of happiness. I will further consider and examine his theory of the Doctrine of the Mean. Finally, I will explore how Aristotle distinguishes between the two kinds of virtues and this will result
Different ethical theories would view this issue in various ways. Virtue ethics believes in placing a heavy focus on moral character, while focusing less on the action itself. In this situation a virtue ethicist would evaluate if ending or continuing Samantha's treatment would impact her moral character. The beliefs of strong moral character carried by a virtue ethicist would encourage Samantha to further her parents wishes of continuing treatment. A virtue ethicist respect for human life causes them to believe that Samantha should continue treatment because of the courage and strength it shows. However some virtue ethicist might argue that because of the value for human life, Samantha should be allowed to discontinue treatment to end the immense suffering she is in. A virtue ethicist would considered all of the details of the patients suffering before making a
(Hursthouse, R. and Pettigrove, G., 2016) This is important because it points out how the ethics of virtue system is based so directly on character. Individuals who base their morals this way will understand that what they are doing is the right thing and that is enough reason to do it. Without that good character, there would be no decision to ‘be charitable or
Another problem with virtue ethics is that it is hard to determine what traits are virtues and whether they are so in all circumstances. Virtuous characteristics can be performed even when the actions carried out are unethical. For example, courage is often regarded as a virtue, but can there not be courageous thefts? It seems that a theft could exhibit courage while robbing a store, yet everyone usually agrees that stealing is morally wrong. There are also so many different opinions and perspectives of people that come from diverse cultures and societies.
Ethics and virtue have been a very contentious issue facing society for centuries. Many argue over the merits of various theories, each with its own philosophies and assumptions. It is this argument that has given rise to many popular and followed theories of ethics and virtues. The theories discussed primarily in this document include the virtue theory, utilitarianism, and deontological theory. Each is very distinct to the others in regards to its principles and assumptions regarding human behavior. Each however, has merit in regards to question of ethics and virtue, and how it should subsequently be valued.
Ethics are the “standards of conduct that indicate how one should behave based on moral duties and virtues.”
Virtue ethics bases moral decisions on a virtuous character. By this definition, virtues are constants within the heart and mind that
Virtue ethics is a theory that focuses on character development and what virtues one should obtain to be who they are supposed to be, as oppose to actions. An example of virtue ethics would be someone who is patient, kind, loving, generous, temperance, courage and flourishing as oppose to a person who lies, cheats, and
There are many strengths and weaknesses to virtue ethics that can be discussed, but they both have a main strength and weakness that could be talked about. One primary strength of virtue ethics is character traits this is how we use are virtues to help other people and make them better. People should have respect, love, and compassion for one another these are what a person should have in them innately to help others out because it’s the way you are instead of doing just because you should. The main weakness of virtue ethics that people argue is that it does not have focus of what is supposed to be morally right and wrong in the first place even though we know that something like murder is not moral virtue ethics doesn’t really ask this question.
the virtues are that the good man can tell what to do in a morally
Another part of Aristotles' theory includes the idea of virtue. From my understanding, Virtue of character has a lot to do with our actions. It looks at what makes us do what we do. He explains, “Virtue, then, is of two sorts, virtue of thought and virtue of character” (Aristotle 18). In order to reach eudaimonia, we have to act virtuously. That is done by doing the right thing and knowing that you are doing it. Virtue of character is something that we do not automatically just have. It is something that we have to work on and practice. With practice, right actions will become habits. The virtuous person is someone who does not have to think about what the right thing to do is, they just do it.
