Irony flooded "The Gift of the Magi." Della placed emphasis on acquiring a worthy present for Jim by Christmas day, as did Jim. The couple decided to sell their prized possessions in secrecy, just to obtain nice presents for each other. The ironic part comes into play when we find out that Della decided to sell her majestic hair to purchase Jim a new platinum chain for his prized gold watch. Well, Jim sold his prized possession to purchase Bella the comb set she had longed for. Without hair to comb and a watch to be carried by a platinum chain, the gifts were deemed unusable until the future. Without the plot twist, this story would lack necessary substance and irony. Although, the plot twist is important, it solely does not make the entire
In "The gift of the Magi" and "Bert and Ernie's Christmas", both show various similarities and differences. The first similarity was they both were short on money and on time, causing them to trade their treasured possessions for money in order to buy a gift for their loved one. One difference in " The gift of the Magi" there status was husband and wife, while in "Bert and Ernie's Christmas" they were just friends. Despite their different relationship status, in both stories they gave up their prized possessions for each other, not knowing they needed their belongings in order for them to properly use the gifts they had received. As an example in "The gift of the Magi" the wife, Della, sacrificed her hair to buy her husband a
The story was written by O’Henry in 1906. The story was centered around a seemingly poor couple who did not have enough money to buy each other the gifts that their significant other deserved. The story took place during Christmas. The Gift of the Magi is like a classic wisdom story in the bible. O’Henrys choice of title depicts symbolism between the three magi that brought gold, frankincense, and mur, to the baby Jesus and the gifts that Jim and Della had given to each other which mainly consisted of selfless love, Della’s hair and Jims pocket watch. This itself ties into the theme of his story. These gifts all entail the act
Two prized possessions. Two important items. That was it. In the story, "The Gift of the Magi" by O.Henry, Della and James Dillingham Young are destitute and live in a ramshackle apartment for a few dollars a month. Della is without work and James' business is failing, but, they have each other. In fact, to prove their love for one another, they sacrifice their most valuable possessions without the other knowing only to find that neither had their item. In writing the dramatic tale O.Henry uses figurative language and symbolism to connect "The Gift of the Magi" to the biblical story of magi to prove that sacrifice is a means to prove love and devotion.
The Gift of the Magi is a short story about a young, less fortunate couple. Christmas is around the corner, and Della is concerned about what to get for her cherished husband. She has been saving up for months. Yet she only has 1.78 dollars. This puts her in a dilemma. She wants to get him something honorable, but 1.78 dollars does not go very far. Sitting by the mirror, looking at her long brown hair. Her hair was one of the two greatest treasures the couple had. The other treasure was Jim’s watch, which had a leather strap in replace of a chain. To afford Jim’s present, she cut off her hair and sold it. Later in the evening when Jim comes home, he is quite surprised to find his wife having cut off her long precious hair.
“Gift of the Magi”, short story by O’Henry, and Gift of the Magi, directed by Lisa Mulcahy, is about a young newlywed couple that sell their most valuable possessions to get each other what they want for christmas, yet discover the true gift they got was love. The conflict in Gift of the Magi has many differences and yet few similarities. The conflict between both the short story and film is that Jim, the main male protagonist, and Della, Jim’s wife, struggle to purchase gifts for each other for christmas. In the short story, Della gets her hair cut off to buy Jim a chain fob for his watch, and Jim sells his watch to buy combs for Della.
O’ Henry is known as an author who has a type of twist ending in his books, and “The Gift of the Magi” is no different. His use of symbolism and Irony helped create this twist ending. This story contains two characters, Jim and Della, who sell their most valued possession to buy a gift to the other, this gift corresponds to their valued possession. The Dillingham are considered to be wiser than the Three Wise man because they used love to get their gifts, not money.
So that she could get Jim a Christmas gift. And what about Mathidle’s husband, he gave up the money that he was saving to buy himself a new gun. There is pride found in both stories. Della and Jim in The Gift of Magi, could have simply talked to each other and admit that they just did not have the money to get each other a gift and just made dinner and enjoyed each other. As for
“Life is full of sniffles sob and smiles. With sniffles predominating.” That’s just one of many quotes from O. Henry’s short story Gift of the magi featuring a young couple trying to buy each other a good Christmas present with little money. O. Henry uses direct characterization, irony, and the character’s action to develop the theme. Happiness is found on the inside not through material things.
In O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi,” a married couple, Della and Jim is struggling financially. Della is very upset because she does not think she will be able to buy a gift for Jim on Christmas. When Christmas day comes, Della tells Jim, “I couldn’t live through Christmas without giving you a gift.”(O. Henry 51-52) Because Della loves Jim so much, she decides to cut her hair. She uses the money to buy him a watch fob for his heirloom watch. Little does she know, Jim is just as thoughtful and caring. After giving Jim his gift, he tells Della, “‘I sold the watch to get the money to buy the combs.’”(O. Henry 53) Jim’s love for Della is so strong. He sells a very expensive heirloom to buy his
In The Gift of the Magi there are lots of examples of irony presented to the reader. The author presents a case of this on page one forty-two. The example states “ For there lay The Combs –the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshiped for long in a Broadway window” (Porter). The irony here is that the character Della has cut and sold her hair in order to buy her husband, Jim, a new chain for his watch. Irony then strikes again seconds later. On the same page it soon states “I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs.” (page 142). The irony here is that he has sold the watch, but Della spent the money she made from selling her hair to buy a chain for his watch. This is a case of Dramatic Irony because we know about it but
H. Jackson Brown, Jr. said it perfectly, “Love is when the other person’s happiness is more important than your own.” Brown meant that sacrificing is little in the way of a person’s love for another, and that love is being happy when the other person is happy. In O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi”, Della and Jim Dillingham Young have trouble deciding how to get each other Christmas presents. By writing the short story “The Gift of the Magi”, Henry portrays the theme that love is shown through selfless gifts. Henry reveals the theme of the story through characterization and irony.
Wacky twists, something this writer always uses in his writing, O. Henry seems to always use but his most famous would have to be in the story “The Gift of the Magi.” Even with all of these twists and turns in his stories he does use two notable literary elements. This two points being symbolism and irony, he uses these elements to show various points in this short story. With both of this devices being used, symbolism was the one used more to show more thought and more emotion.
