Why GMOs should not be allowed in the General Food Supply.
What are GMOs? GMO stands for genetically modified organism, an organism that has had its genes or genetic makeup changed or alter in some way in a research lab. Two ways that scientist accomplish this is through either gene cloning or protein engineering (Phillips, Teresa p.1). Tampering with the genetics of any species, particularly one that we consume into our bodies has unknown effects that have not been completely research enough. We do not know how genetically modifying the foods we eat will affect our own inner bodies and genes. Big research and food companies, such as Monsanto, have put their own bottom-line, or greed, above our health and we are unwittingly being

These chemicals, which are actual poisons, make their way to our ground-water supply, which in turn is consumed by us.
Today, most soy and corn grown in the U.S. is Genetically Modified. Soy and corn are also the number one feed for the animals that we eat. Corn also provides the ingredients for most of our sweeteners and cooking oil. Most processed foods sold in the United States have ingredients from genetically modified crops. And yet, “Scientific Studies have not concluded that Genetically Modified foods are safe for the population” (Eating Well. “Should the US ban GMOs?”). The major question that has developed with GMOs is whether or not these modification in the plants we consume is detrimental to our own health. Are we trading higher crop yields for personal health risks? Are we replacing possible starvation with another form of disease or health problem? And, “Should GMOs be allowed in the General Food Supply?” “Both environmental and food safety concerns have been raised by opponents of GM crops”. (Chantal Nielsen, Kym Anderson, p. iv). Many people recognize the fact that GMOs have not been tested properly on their effects toward our own genetics. Food items that contain GMOs are unlabeled in America. Why are U.S. food manufacturers being so sneaky about which foods contain GMOs? In Europe, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, GMOs have been banned because
Did you know that 80% of the food packages sold in the United States have GMOs in them? Its true! Imagine going to the store simply for a can of beans, or even just a chocolate bar. There may be a good chance that the food product selected contains GMOs.
It’s been proven 75% of the food on our shelves in stores contain GMO’s. All of these are also unlabeled, hiding the truth from
Foremost in the arguments concerning GM foods are the practices and standards of labeling. Currently sixty four countries require mandatory labeling of these products. The United States is not one of these countries that require mandatory labeling. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is currently using a very lenient standard for informing consumers according to
With such a controversial topic as it is currently, the debate of genetically modified food and organisms is one that comes up often when talking about our environment and the preservation of our food. Many arguments have been made for each side either justifying or condemning the practice. However GMOs (Genetically modified organisms) are more deeply rooted to our food ecosystem than the average person is lead to believe. There is a miasma of misconceptions surrounding this topic and having proper knowledge of this topic and debate is crucial for anybody to form a perspective on what they eat and how it affects the society and environment around them. The more conventional
A GMO is an organism whose genome has been altered by the techniques of genetic engineering so that its DNA contains one or more genes not normally found there. Behind this loaded definition hides many secrets and a lot of pernicious lies unforeseen by the general public. The deleterious ramifications and the spine-chilling potential power caused by GMOs is something worth taking a look at. There is an abundance of serious consequences our generation and our future generations hold because of GMOs, and if we do not take action soon we may run out of time.
Gmo’s or genetically modified organisms rising, are mostly crop’s or food that has been modified to taste better and also to produce certain vitamins and minerals. Although lately in the 21st century there has been talk of these so called gmo’s , but before we get into it we must answer. What is a gmo? Well to answer it. A gmo is an organism or lifeform that has been genetically modified to have extra “effects” such as having a certain appearance or simply resisting a certain type of pesticide or product. That is considered non-harmful to humans or simply to make it produce a certain type of vitamin or mineral to help with human diet consumption.
GMOs are genetically modified organisms that are harmful to the environment and to humankind . For example , Many people want GMOs banned because the companies don’t want the consumers to know what is in the food they consume . In addition , GMOs are not productive they are terrible for the environment and for humankind . So the
What is a GMO? A GMO is a genetically modified organism. This means that we took a look at the DNA of an organism and took some out and replaced it with a strand from another organism to make that organism resistant to things like diseases or change the plant, animal, or bacterias product. There is also a process called selective breeding which is where we will breed animals with certain traits to other organisms with the same trait, hoping that their offspring will carry the same trait. I do not think that genetically modifying organisms is the right thing to do, I think that selective breeding is a healthy alternative compared to GMO’s.
When people hear "GMO" not many people know what they are or what they do. GMO stands for is "genetically modified organism", which means that they 're living creature that made from different things inside laboratory for a certain purpose. It 's made from crossbreeding different DNA 's like plants, bacteria and animals with a little bit of chemicals to make what is needed in the world. What 's needed around the world is foods and seeds to produce them. However, these types of foods or seeds might look like the common ones we purchase at the store for daily or weekly bases on the outside, but they aren 't the same inside. The reason why GMOs aren 't same as the regular ones is because unlike the them, foods like corn or broccoli that have an expiration period before they rot or struggle to live before they reach the stores. GMO are able to survive a long time because the DNA that they 're crossbred with it, gives it the ability to survive and adapt to its surroundings so it can be later consumed by the one who purchased it or it 's grown. Although, GMOs can help end world hunger and give the world a larger supply of food, which is a wonderful idea that it can, but it can cause more harm than good. The reason why it can cause more harm than good is because we don 't know what types cause it can do. GMOs are extremely dangerous, but not only to ourselves, but global as well. So to fully understand how GMOs affects on the world, we must see what effects does it do to
GMOs are genetically modified organisms. This is when an organism’s or micro organism's genetic makeup has been modified in a lab to meet a specific purpose. The organisms can be anything from animals and livestock to our crops and food. Genetic modification effects many of the foods we eat every single day. Some crops are genetically modified to be insect resistant, grow faster, or get bigger. There is a lot of debate in the scientific community whether GMOs are safe to consume or not and what the effects might look like if they did carry certain risks with them. With all the genetically modified crops that are now being grown around the world, we have to start asking whether or not they are good for us long term, as almost
GMO, “Genetically modified organism; an organism or microorganism whose genetic material has been altered by means of genetic engineering,” as defined by dictionary.com. GMOs today are a great leap to another stage of technology we are still developing and researching… as some people think, but they are not the most essential thing we need today. Injecting chemicals and drugs into food for “more nutrients” and placing harmful pesticides is not the ideal way of bringing a better cause into our world. These chemicals are then eaten by humans, and what happens after? People get sick. Furthermore, animals, plants, and our environment are disrupted as well. Also, these biotechnology companies that create GMOs are starting to get on the nerves of people by enlarging their company, monopolizing, and starting to enforce GMOs on us. Therefore, GMOs are bad for us and should not be permitted in our society.

A GMO (genetically modified organism) is the outcome of a lab procedure where qualities from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the qualities of a unrelated plant or animal. The qualities might originate from bacteria, infections, insects, animals or even people. GMO is when an organism has been altered genetically in order to look more pleasing to the consumer’s eyes. It is also used for making the plants stronger and more likely to survive the harsh winters or merciless inscects. You enter a grocery store, hoping to find some red apples. You reach the fruit aisle and notice that the apples at Shop-Rite are bigger then they’ve been before. That’s likely the effect of GMO. GMO helps those
Genetically modified organisms are not properly tested. In fact, the FDA abstains from conducting a safe study of it’s own. As a result, the United States Government relies on a study conducted by the same company that created genetically modified organisms and has approved the usage of GMOs to grow this nations food. Not to mention, this study has only proven that consuming GMO foods do not have an effect on humans within ninety days. This is not long enough to see if it has a long time effect on humanity. This study can only benefit GMO companies for profit purposes. ("GMO Facts." The NonGMO Project RSS. Web. 4 Mar. 2015.) Since then, over one thousand seven hundred studies have tried to prove that modified foods are safe. Sadly, most of these studies have proven otherwise. ("Home - Earth Open Source." Earth Open Source. Web. p. 102. 4 Mar. 2015.). As a result, over 60 countries have already required modified foods to be labeled for example: Vietnam, Peru, Ecuador, and India (“Labeling Around the World | Just
Present day America has been struggling with a national eating disorder for numerous decades. Through the continuous use of chemicals, preservatives and processing of foods, the connection between nature and one 's plate has been abandoned. GMOs or genetically modified organisms have been another key factor into the nation’s struggle. These modified foods and seeds were created with the future of the food industry in mind, yet they have been proven to create harmful effects. GMOs have been at the root of the major food issues within America. The use of GMOs within the food industry needs to decline, in order to see improvement within the food industry, human progress, and environment. The use of genetically modified foods and seeds
