When I think about gender roles in the past I automatically think about men and how they were more powerful than the women. The men could not do anything wrong in society’s eyes but women had to walk on egg shells to make the men happy. When I think of the men and women in the past I automatically think about how the men went out and worked while the women stayed at the house had children and stayed in the kitchen. The men could go out and cheat on the women all they want but if a woman even thought about talking to a man they would be punished. The women in the past were always less than men, they were never smart enough to be anything or be anyone. Usually in the past when a girl turned a certain age she got married to an older man, usually one that their father picked, and had children, that was all that she could ever be. …show more content…
I think about how the world had betrayed this women. They made this woman plump and empty, she does not even have a face. This statue is nude showing everything to the naked eye, she does not have a desirable body. This sculpture shows how much a woman was respected back in the day, which was very little. Then there is a sculpture called ‘Kouros/statue of Standing Youth’ which represents the meant back in the day and age. The sculpture is a very young, athletic, toned man. This man has the body every man wants. This sculpture is desirable to every women. This man represents power, and desire. Unlike the sculpture of the woman this man has a face and a very powerful looking
The main idea in this essay is to describe the sculpture Woman with Dog. The purpose for this essay is to inform the reader what the statue looks like, so the reader can visualize the statue.
Due to advances in technology, the discovery of new lands, and changing public opinion; people desire new things and the equality of man is constantly changing. For thousands of years males were considered superior to females in most cultures. In a civilized society it was often considered the duty of the man to work and provide for his family. Alternately, it was perceived that women should stay home and take care of the children and that they were not able to perform most the tasks that men did. Population expansion into the western part of the United States marked a change in the traditional role of women in daily life. The new gender roles that were pioneered during this time of expansion were very different from the previously defined roles. Gender roles again began to change at the turn of the nineteenth century. Unlike the 1800s, the 1900s held more independent development opportunities, however, at the same time women went back to governed by a strict common perception.
Both of the elderly women are huddled together, lightly patting themselves, just as if they were cold. The elderly women both peek out, as if they were suspicious of something. You can look at the sculpture from different angles, like a 360 degree angle, you’ll be able to see the detailed properties that the sculpture consists of. The craftsmanship does add significant effect to how we look at the sculpture. Half of Mueck’s artworks are reduced in size, just like this particular artwork, which is only 82.6 x 48.7 x 41.5cm, while other half artworks created by Mueck are very increased in size, like one called “A Girl” which is 110.0 x 501.0 x 134.5cm. Mueck’s figurative sculptures, all explore the themes of birth through ageing and to death. Mueck has never made life like sculptures, he says “I never made life-size figures because it never seemed to be interesting. We meet life-size people every day”.
Some features include the size of the women and appearance. The size of the women in the sculpture shows that she is big and powerful. And the appearance and how she is sitting shows that she is a royalty or like Mellaart said goddess. Another understanding could of been that it was just a sculpture pertaining to body image.
The woman depicted in the sculpture stands straight and tall. Her large scale along with her posture gives her a powerful appearance. Her expression is serene and composed. She does not exhibit much emotion. Instead, she is shown as being stoic and controlled. She looks straight ahead, and her entire body points forward.
Sculpture is considered the highest form of art in the Roman culture. It also belongs to the Roman culture and the early imperial period. It is a roman copy of the Greek original by Kalamis, which represents the rape of Cassandra. Cassandra in Greek mythology is the prophetic daughter of Piram. In the original it features a woman who appears distressed and her garments slip and reveal her breasts. This work of art symbolized rape. This head was beautiful and focused. The sculpture was the first thing on display in this gallery. The head looked like it belonged to a much larger work of art. It seemed copped off and unbalanced. The curls on the side of the head were deep and accentuated. The curls on top of the head had less grooves, shadows, and depth. The nose was broken off along with the right eyebrow and chin. I could not tell if it was a woman or a man. When you view the artwork from different angles the facial expression is different. It is a simple work of art.
Made of terracotta, this statue was easily over six feet tall and it represented a male actor impersonating a female character. The actor in question was wearing a floor length short-sleeved dress. Even if the dress lacked motifs and intricate designs, the soft creases that ran along the entire dress brings a feminine touch to the overall image. Another factor adding a feminine touch was the detailed hair updo. Both of these soft and delicate features contrast greatly with the face of the character. Unlike the rest of the features, the character’s face is harsh. This had to do with the mask that the actor is wearing. With his eyes and mouth wide open, he is projecting strong emotions. During that time period, since men were the only ones allowed to participate in theatrical plays, they were required to wear masks to present a character. This sculpture expresses the importance of activities and shows how far people were willing to push boundaries just for the sake of entertainment. I was impressed by this figure as nowadays play producers look for a certain type of person to play a certain role whereas back in time, men only had to wear mask to portray a
Interpretively, the form-content of this sculpture undoubtedly expresses the subject of feminine beauty. The shapes and structural relationships can be directly interpreted to reveal some quite enchanting archetypal mysticism on the subject. (Martin and Jacobus 53, 54, 105) The diamond shape formed in the upper body can be interpreted as a symbol of emotional strength. Diamonds are notoriously hardy stones and the area that the diamond is placed suggests matters of the heart. Women are often characterized as being emotionally strong. The archetype of the moon is quite apparent as an interpretive form in this sculpture as well. The moon is associated with water because of its pull on the tides, and water is associated with emotion because of
Let’s look at the sculpture itself. There is a naked man sitting in a deep thought or concentration. The figures back is arch and the hands have curled fingers resting under the chin. Notice the muscular back and shoulders. We saw this in the paintings I talked about the other day with “The Oath on the Tennis Court” – The muscular bodies show a sign of strength and power.
The Sculpture chosen was placed in a temple where funerals were placed and it depicts three figures, two standing and one sitting, one of the figures standing is female, and are all wearing traditional ancient Greek clothing. The sculpture is definitely two-dimensional as it was sculpted to be viewed from the front only since it is not free standing. The Sculpture does, however, have some three-dimensional elements as all the figures are carved so deeply into the stone giving the illusion that it is free standing. It is definitely a form of concrete art and it is very naturalistic as it in no way disrupts the nature of the persons or the robes they are wearing. But it by no means tries to be as realistic as possible, since the lack of detail on the
In history women had a lot of different laws to follow than the men. They couldn't go to school for a very long time. They had to stay at home and not work outside of the home. They couldn't vote. There is a lot more that women couldn't do. Women had a hard time back than, and some of them were very scared to stand up for themselves because they don't want to get hurt. Men had the overpowerment of the women, and that was very wrong. Men thought that they were better than women. Men were basically lazy when they got home, and they made the women do everything for them like cook, clean, take care of the children if there was any. The men just took the women for granted, and they didn't care. They just wanted to be very rude to the women in their
Image B is a Hellenistic Greek culture sculpture that shows many differences from the earlier two cultures. Starting with the stance of this figure, we can visually see that movement is portrayed in this figure. The stance is lively and shows the movement of turning by the way the head is positioned facing down and looking toward the back of the body. The feet are also showing movement by the way the right foot is swinging in front of the figure and is off the ground, and the arms are positioned as making the body move by having one of them grabbing her drapery, as well as the other one bent in front of her body. The woman is fully clothed in this sculpture as well, but the wet and big drapery help show the woman’s curvature. One of the biggest changes from the Classical period to the Hellenistic period was the used of emotion shown on the face. Stoicism was no longer used. Facial expressions are finally shown to capture the real feeling of the figure. Even though we can’t see the full face of this woman, we can tell that she is showing emotion. I can feel passion, as well as, sadness in her eyes. She seems to be lost in her own thoughts in this sculpture. Hellenistic pieces usually tell stories and also show movement by the angles in sculptures. The invisible angles in this sculpture (curve from the foot to the hip, the hip to the elbow, and the elbow to the face) also help this figure show movement. Women in Greek culture are portrayed different throughout the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods, but each period is significant in showing how far along their cultures came, as well as, showing the changes throughout Greek art
As a young girl, I remember going to the Springville Museum of Art on a field trip and seeing this work of art. At first, I was a bit shocked due to the mother’s lack of clothing; however, I noticed that her nakedness was not portrayed in a disrespectful way. Despite being a bit disturbed, I was able to recognize something pure and genuinely sweet about the statue. As I have revisited this artwork, I’ve become less troubled by it and more aware of its tender and even divine
We all know that our sexes have been a huge part of human society. But why is it that men have become, or felt superior to women? In early societies it was believed that men and women were actually “equal”. This meaning, both men and women had a part in the everyday lives of their society. Nobody was inferior to one-another. Women had a place in society as well as men. Women were not inferior to men; their part in society was controlled by that particular societies’ needs. In early human civilization, there were no day-care centers, no schools, and no laws against any type of labor. The only thing that was in existence was family, the church, and the occasional temple/mosques. Henceforth, the most common stereotypes about men and women begin to take effect. Women were required to be at home in light of the fact that the absence of sophistication in society fundamentally consigned most men and women into
The sculpture represents a sign of meditation. A woman is meditating in a lotus position with her body cracking to reveal an inner light. It looks as if she is building internal energy or life force. I feel as it represents a sign of strength. It is shown as if she is at ease or clearing the mind. How Paige assembled the sculpture together shows a sign
