Zoos : My Favorite Place To Be?

Good Essays

As a child, the zoo was one of my favorite places to be. The ability to see wild animals in my local area is so convenient for me, but not so convenient for the animals living there. My opinion on zoos have most definitely changed when I put myself in the position of these animals in captivity. Animals are constantly going through pain and suffering by being behind bars, being separated from their family and not being able to live how they would in the wild. They are taken miles away from their natural habitat, and people expect them to adapt to environments that they are not used to. The average zoo exploits the animals in their care, and disregards many things that animals go through. Even though there are many benefits to zoos, they are more harm than good for animals. People should not be locking up animals who do not need to be saved in the first place.
Most animals are miserable in zoos. They are taken away from their homes only to be locked up and viewed by the human public. In reality, animals just sit in prisons wasting their life away. If that happened to actual people, they clearly would not be living a very happy life. Many animals that are in zoos have a mental disease called zoochosis. Zoochosis occurs when animals are stressed and depressed from being held in captivity. A news.com.au article states, "Penguins in a British sanctuary are so miserable about the weather they are being given antidepressants."(News.com.au) This quote is a good example of zoochosis
