A Hard Working Woman
Zora Naele Hurston published “Sweat” in the 1920’s, a piece of literature which narrates the story of a hard-working woman by the name of Delia Jones and her struggles to overcome the oppression of her abusive husband. As the piece of literature advances, readers can interpret various symbols incorporated into the writing. Three of the major themes found in this story are domestic abuse, empowerment, and survival and these are interlinked by symbols such as the pile of white clothes, her sweat, and the Chinaberry tree. The symbols in the story and the theme together make the story more powerful and amazing for the readers. In addition, Delia Jones character is a dynamic character that rises from the ashes from being this character that tolerates Sykes’ abuse into liberated soul who no longer lives in fear.

As how Barbara Ryan mentions, “This introduction prepares us to think anew about fiction in which a wash- woman is heavily burdened not only by her job, but also by a wastrel husband” (Invisible Men: Hurston…). This slowly starts to come to an end when Delia is tired of Sykes always stepping all over her. She is tired to always being looked as someone useless. Delia tries to stand up for herself and show Sykes that she is not going to be putting up with his physical and emotional abuse anymore. In this era of time it is the way of life that a woman had to be marry because woman were not viewed as someone who could sustain a life on their own. But Delia knew that was not the case in her marriage. She had been through enough and she is the one that is supporting her husband instead of it being the other way
