There is hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. 2. Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland is not performing enough of the hormone and slowing down ones metabolism. Hyperthyroidism is when the gland becomes enlarged due to too much of the thyroid hormone being produced. It can also increase a persons metabolism rate. 3. When treating hypothyroidism a person is usually give a synthetic medication to make up for the loss of those hormones. Those with hyperthyroidism are give medication that will get absorbed into the gland, slowing production of the hormone and making it shrink.
