I am pleased to inform you that the board has approved the hiring of a Chief KnowledgeOfficer (CKO) to take the lead in developing the infrastructure, resources, process, and culture for the upcoming Knowledge Management Department. The CKO will be the primary resource for ensuring that the goals of the KM department alignwith the organizational strategies and objectives of GDD. This includes capturing tacit knowledge of our employees through various methods and documenting the necessary knowledge to ensure that it can be disseminated and used foryears to come by existing and future employees. The role of the CKO is to help to ensurethat GDD transforms into a contemporary business environment that promotes knowledge sharing to continue to be sustainable and profitable. The CKO will achieve this by prioritizing KM initiatives, implementing KM processes and procedures, and creating a knowledge-sharing culture through socialization and easy to use KM technologies. Given the multidisciplinary nature of KM, the CKO candidate will need to have the necessary skills to qualify for this role.The CKO must have effective communication skills that promote both proficient verbal and written skills, along with excellent listening skills. The CKO must have prior knowledge and experience working with an IT department and have proficient technological skills. Tacit knowledge is often hard to capture because it is usually shared through storytelling or socializing, and this exhibits why the CKO must be a proficient communicator and listener to capture this knowledge. The CKO will need to be tech savvy to maneuver the KM technologies that are determined as the best fit (by the CKO) for GDD. KM programs and initiatives are rapidly changing as this field continues to grow and it will be essential for the CKO to grow with future trends to ensure that the KM system implemented is running at maximum efficiency. The skills the CKO will need to continuously develop will be their leadership skills and ability to promote a knowledge-sharing culture. The CKO will need to have the ability to reduce potential KM barriers bytaking on a federalism political model that emphasizes an approach to information management based on consensus and negotiation. This approach will promote teamwork and collaboration as it will give the CKO the opportunity to work with competing thoughts and collectively determine what knowledge is useful. This will require the leader to have strong leadership skills that promote a culture of trust, cooperation, and learning. The CKO must continue to develop good leadership skills and learn to navigate the organization with a federalism approach to help GDD transition into a knowledge-sharing culture and allow for employees to be heard and their knowledge to be shared. The combination of all these skills with give GDD a competitive advantage and will ensure the successful implementation of a KM system that will harness internal knowledge and reduce the risk of organizational memory loss.
