If 80% of a population has a heterozy gous phenotype, and 16% of that population shows a recessive phenotype, is that population in Hardy - Weinberg equilibrium? In other words, does the population obey the rules of H - W? Perform a statistical analysis to determine your final answer.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Hardy and Weinberg formulated law which states that the allele and genotype frequencies in a population will remain constant from generation to generation in the absence of evolutionary influences such as mutation, migration, genetic drift, and natural selection.

Step 2

It is represented by the formula:

p + q =1   --- (1)

Where, p and q represent dominant and recessive alleles.

This equation can be modified to p2 + q+2pq = 1   --- (2)

where pand q2 are the homozygous forms of dominant and recessive alleles, whereas 2pq represents heterozygous individuals in the population. It gives the two allelic combinations in a particular population.
