Concept explainers
Study Table 14.4. Analyze solubility and temperaturedata to determine the general trend followed by thegases
Interpretation:
The change in solubility of different compounds with the change in temperature have to be justified.
Concept introduction:
Solubility: Solubility can be defined as maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in known amount of solvent at a given temperature and pressure. Solubility of the solute in a particular solvent is affected by the change in temperature.
Answer to Problem 107A
The table represents the solubility of different solutes in water at Various Temperatures. From the table, we see that the solubilities of gases like NH3, CO2 and O2 decrease with increasing the temperature. For most of the solid solutes, the solubility increases with increasing the temperatureexcept Ca(OH)2 and Li2SO4. For the compound Ca(OH)2 and Li2SO4, the trend is different and their solubilities decrease with increasing with temperature.
Explanation of Solution
Solubility of Solutes depend on the temperature. The solubilities of solid solutes will increase with increasing the temperature of the solution while the solubilities of gaseous compounds will decrease with increasing the temperature.
