Steps to read a word from the memory:
In the given 4 × 3 memory circuit shown in Figure 3.42 contains 4 columns and each column containing a 3-bit word is represented. The flip flop stores each bits. The clock input is what coordinates the flip flops to function together. Hence, each time a read or write operation take place, all bits in a word are written to or read from. The “S0” and “S1” address lines are used to select the word in memory to be referenced. While the lines “I1”, “I2” and “I3” are used for writing data into the memory and the line “O1”, “O2” and “O3” are used for reading data from the memory.
The steps need to read a 3-bit word from the memory would be as follows:
