Concept explainers
Pulse Rate Consider the following scenario: Zach starts jogging on a treadmill. His resting pulse rate is 70 beats per minute (b.p.m.). As he continues to jog on the treadmill, his pulse increases at a constant rate until, after 10 minutes, his pulse is 120 b.p.m. He then starts jogging faster and his pulse increases at a constant rate for 2 minutes, at which time his pulse is up to 150 b.p.m. He then begins a cooling-off period for 7 minutes until his pulse goes down to 110 b.p.m. He then gets off the treadmill and his pulse returns to 70 b.p.m, after 12 minutes. Draw a graph of Zach’s pulse as a function of time.
