Rotation is a motion wherein the bone eventually turns on its longitudinal axis. The atlantoaxial joint, one that swings when the head is rotated to make the 'no' gesture, is the spot of rotational movement. For example, the lateral rotation begins to rotate the anterior surface of the femur or humerus laterally, so even though medial rotation rotates the anterior surface of the femur or humerus medially.
