For this week the topics of our readings was Can Schools Change: Educational Reform and Change. The readings focused on how schools can change to improve education and what kind of changes can and should be made to improve our educational system in the future. These topics are something that many people think about because so many are concerned for the future of education.
A. Summary of Readings
Learning from Abroad This reading was interesting because it looked at the education systems of different countries and compared it to the education system of the United States. The focus was on countries that have better records at improving academic achievement than the United States. It also discussed seven patterns that likely contribute to

I found an article titled “ Does Catholic High School Attendance Lead to Attendance at a More Selective College”? Now, yes I did not attend a Catholic High School but it still interested me to see what the study found. According to this article Catholic school students outperform their public school counterparts on vocabulary, math, and reading achievement tests. While the article does mention that there is not a ton of evidence on the impact of Catholic schools on high school graduation and college attendance, but what does show is all the positive effects Catholic schools have. One of the authors of the article said that their findings discovered that by attending Catholic high school, it raises the probability of attending college. The articles findings discovered that there is an advantage for Catholic high schools attendance at the top of the college quality distribution, but no advantage at the bottom half. This is because the colleges at the bottom have a more open enrollment policy where most students who apply get in; no matter what high school they …show more content…
However, there are quite a few discussions on bringing a new type of school to light. Two of the articles I found “ A School for the future- 2025: Practical Futures Thinking” and Online Versus Traditional Face-To-Face Learning In a Large Introductory Course discusses the different types of schooling that could happen but not for quite some time. The articles focus on two classroom options, the face-to –face that we have now, and the online course. The studies showed that there was no real difference between scores for the two different classroom types. While there were no significant differences there are some clear benefits to using online courses. One of those benefits is cost-effectiveness. The courses could also be easier to schedule and students might actually be satisfied with convince, flexibility and independent learning. While it might be nice to not have to leave my house to go to school I do not think I would be as motivated to go to school if I had the choice to go. I mean right now I have the choice to go to school or not but my grade also depends on my attendance in my classes. If attendance is not part of your grade how many students will log onto their online class instead of logging onto
Everyone has their own learning styles. Going to school online might not be cut out for a person that needs to be face to face with an instructor. Or a person that has to have on hands training might not want to attend an online campus. It’s a tough decision when you have to make this decision on how you want to continue with your education. An education is an education, so it’s better to have one than not to have one at all. So it all really boils down to you making that decision based on how you interpret your learning skills. For me, online is what fit in my current life style. It’s convenient, comfortable, and less expensive. The
America used to thrive on its education system and that is why it became one of the greatest nations in the world. Education is the backbone of our country, and we must give high priority to improve its current condition. Unfortunately, in the past couple of decades, the education system has been regressing. It has been on the decline and not as effective. The quality of education in a country has an influence on GDP growth, social cohesion and social well being in general. In order to improve the quality of education in the U.S., the following must be taken into consideration: the structure of our education system must be reanalyzed, we must compare and contrast our education system to systems of other countries with higher rankings, and finally, there must be a solution.
Many people know that the U.S. does not rank very high in education. You hear about how they are always trying to improve education, but they still fall short of where they strive to be. In Anu Partanen’s “Finland’s School Success, What Americans Keep Ignoring” she addresses this issue. She points out what Americans are doing wrong, what Finland is doing right, and how the U.S. can improve the education system in many ways.
Over the course of many years, several things have changed, including technology, science, and people; however, our culture and idea of education have not. Some of these problems include teachers that are not being as valued as they should be and students who are changing both physically and mentally, but are still not being supported by our education system. The education system itself is also problematic as well, but it can be fixed with a change in our culture. Teachers and students are the base of the education system, and by not helping them, the system is not helping itself. Students are gaining new emotions and viewpoints, but the education system has had a hard time keeping up, even teachers are changing but are still undervalued.
I disagree with Glassner and Schapiro because some people want the traditional college experience. Don’t get me wrong, technology will eventually take over but a lot of students still want the experience of moving away and going to school. That experience is like nothing else because this is the time of a student’s life where they really discover themselves. Some students want to join social clubs, sororities, fraternities, etc. Online course do not give the students that opportunity. Some students want to travel and attend a school out of state. Some colleges and universities do not have online courses available to those who want to attend that school. The freedom that comes with living on campus is incomparable as well. Every action that the student makes affects the experience of the student. The biggest disadvantage of online courses is that you cannot connect with other students. This period in a person’s life is where the lifelong friends are made and this simply cannot happen if the person is taking online courses.
Nowadays the United States is not known for their educational system. Countries like South Korea, Japan, and Singapore have surpassed the United States buy large margins, in terms of educational success. While other countries are constantly revolutionising their education system, the United States’ education system has not changed in decades, leaving the U.S. unsuccessful. The U.S. continues to fall behind these same countries that are thriving. Due to the fact that the U.S. education system not developing as time went on, leaving them now with a multitude of flaws. The gap between the educated and non-educated, along with the length of how long students are in elementary and high school, are two consequential problems in the United States’ educational system that need to be addressed.
The United States is lagging behind the rest of world in terms of our educational system. We seem to put more emphasis on sports while we cut teachers, defund programs, and neglect making improvements to our schools. This point is highlighted at the very beginning of the article by pointing out the fact that on a critical thinking math test, countries such as Shanghai and Singapore scored the highest while the United States ranked thirty-first. We must acknowledge the disconnect in our education systems to see how we can improve our teaching methods. Most of the top ranking countries put education over everything else which can put overwhelming pressure on its people, but they still value the fact that education equals
Moreover, it will cut down on taxes. Also it will provide a structure for students to get the individualized education they need. With the standardization of online schooling students will be given the opportunity to go at their own pace weather it be faster or slower than that of their
The education system in the United States could definitely use some serious changes. As of now, what we are doing is not producing the results it should and it would seem that it is time for a change. But the last thing this change should be is a federal regulation over national curriculum and testing, if anything, that would increase the current problem. There are numerous issues with the current education system to be addressed. One of the main focuses will be on its lack of concerns for students’ lives and how much they are truly affected by the education they receive. As well, some possible solutions to be considered for the future of this country’s education because staying on this path won’t lead to any improvements.
The education system in the United States has been a problem for some time now and it has yet been fixed. Of course there are somethings that cannot be changed overnight, but it is obvious that there hasn’t been any jurassic reform that the system desperately needs. The country needs to adapt to the student’s needs and attention to engage and connect with the students in the simplest way for them to learn and excel. What the country is doing currently is not getting the job done and there needs to be a change and it needs to happen
I feel that the education you receive from online learning is the same material that is taught in the traditional way. This material is just presented in a way that is better for modern students. Traditional learners however, may also lack the skills to be effective learners. For students who take traditional classes over online classes may lack motivation to be independent learners. In spite of these differences it is safe to assume that both sides want students to enjoy and excel in school no matter if it is traditional or online. Both sides are obviously concerned about the importance of education. Otherwise the argument over whether traditional or online learning is better would not be a debatable issue.
The educational system differs throughout the world; its viewed and taught differently because of cultural differences. Many cultures view education as a necessity of life therefore family are strict and get more involved in there child’s education. Around the world, education is given to students to prepare them for their future. The American education is considered one of the strongest systems of education therefore many countries the American system. The American education system contains many differences and similarities to the foreign system of education; however, students in the American system are not as successful as those in foreign countries like Japan.
Education reform is a topic that every student, parent and teacher should be interested in because it effects everyone in the community. Many different approaches to education reform have been tried, and even though they seem to work for the time being, there are always more improvements that need to be made. One of the best ideas that has been discussed in the most recent years is getting the parents and students more involved in the actual reform process. Many school administrators see a problem with involving students, even though they are the ones most affected by the changes within schools. Student’s opinions should be taken into consideration because they are the ones who see what happens inside the school and within the classroom, and are the most affected by it. Involving parents and students in the reform of their schools will improve the quality of education, improve parent and teacher relationships and reduce parent and student complaints.
Most students find courses online better than in-class learning. Now even some schools are saying yes to online learning! It is a big money saver because the school or college will not have to employ thousands of
Online education has grown since it first came about, there are mixed views on whether it is truly beneficial. The reasons for the huge growth of online education is money even though online education targeted working adults that have little or no time to sit in a traditional classroom for millions of men and women serving in the armed forces online education has made earning a degree much more possible.
