Career Investigation (Electrical Engineer)

What the job involves.
The modern world is run by computers, and the men and women behind these computers are electrical engineers. Electrical engineers distribute, develop, improve and maintain equipment that is used in electrical energy in a wide variety of ways. Electrical engineers apply their physics and math knowledge to assemble and test things such as radars, phones, robots, wiring, lighting in buildings and various other kinds of electrical energy systems. Electrical engineers can be occupied by these projects for months, even years before it’s completed.

One of the major tools they use is a software called CAD (Computer-aided design), this is a type of software that electrical engineers often work with on their computers, amongst other electrical test programs. They also need to become familiar with equipment such as Voltmeters, Voltage Testers, Current Probes and Oscilloscopes, these tools all help with determining. Electrical engineers also need to become familiar with a wide variety of circuit parts like; transistors, resistors inductors, transformers, transmission lines and circuit breakers.
What secondary schooling and subjects are required for entry to this career.
To break into electrical engineering, you need to gain a bachelor of either mathematics or electrical engineering, which require a 75-85 ATAR depending on the university. Many of the electrical engineering and mathematics courses, give the basics of electrical engineering and help prepare students for what they may encounter. Course are offered at Universities across Australia require a strong grasp of electronics and Maths methods.

I was a radar engineer in the RAAF. I was interested in maths and science and followed this into engineering.
What training did you have to complete to become fully qualified?
4-year engineering course at University.
What parts of the job do enjoy? Why?
Initially I liked to learn how things operated and was inquisitive about all aspects of telecommunications in my first few years. The job over time involved working within teams on designing things and then later working with customers so a lot of people interactions.
What gives you the most satisfaction?
Mainly dealing with people and working within teams give me most satisfaction.
Are there aspects of the job you don't like? Why?
The job at time can be high stress with deadlines to meet and targets to meet
Do you have to keep up to date with new technology?
Initially in my career it was a must to keep up to date on technology. This was easy because in the early I was inquisitive. Later on I moved into sales where it became more important to know the big picture but not the details. Then I was able to learn all about the commercial and business aspects of
