We’re two seasons into the College Football Playoff system that supplanted the BCS format and one thing is certain — The Playoff is working.
Yes, No. 1 Clemson and No. 2 Alabama were the last two teams standing this season — And yes, both teams won their semifinal matchups in convincing fashion — But let’s not forget about last year’s CFP where the No. 4 seed Ohio State Buckeyes had a “Cinderella”-type ending to their season after taking down No. 1 Alabama, followed by a 22-point victory over the Oregon Ducks in the College Football Playoff National Championship game.
Television ratings improved significantly in first year of the CFP. According to the Los Angeles Times, last year’s Playoff Championship game’s ratings were up 21 percent compared to the 2014 Vizio BCS National Championship game featuring Florida State and Auburn. The inaugural CFP Championship game was the second-most viewed college football championship game in history. According to Adweek, an estimated 33 million viewers tuned in to last year’s CFP National Championship game between the Buckeyes and Ducks. The most-viewed title game distinction belongs to the 2006 BCS Championship game (35.6 million viewers) between the USC Trojans and Texas Longhorns.

Instead of just two teams competing for a championship, the CFP includes two additional schools. Also, instead of a combination of polls and computer rankings, a committee decides which four teams will compete for a title based on record, strength of schedule and opponent’s record among other
College football has dramatically changed how viewers watch the sport. It all started with transforming rugby into american football, which made a huge impact on today’s society. With the rules having a huge change from 1880 to the 2016 (Watterson John Sayle). Football has increased the amount of views because how popular it has become to the audience since the 1890s (Gridiron Football). Football has changed dramatically since the beginning of the game.
The NCAA has stuck with the current format for the bracket since 2011. There are 68 teams that compete in the NCAA basketball tournament from March to April. 32 of the 68 teams automatically qualify if they win their conference championship. The Ivy does not have a tournament championship so whoever is the regular season champion in the Ivy League has an automatic bid as well. The rest of the 36 slots are filled by at-large-bids and are selected by a committee based on their record and how difficult teams schedules were. This selection is televised on ESPN and is called, “Selection Sunday.” After the committee picks who belong in the tournament, they then need to make the seeding’s for each team. If you are a #1 seed you are considered the best team in that region. If you’re a #16 you are the worst team. There are four separate regions in the tournament and in each region there is a #1 seed through #16. The committee sets up the bracket so the #1 seed has
The NCAA has five major football conferences, the Big XII, Big 10, Pac 10, the ACC, and the SEC (College Football Conferences). The College Football Playoff, including only four teams, will always leave a conference champion out of the playoff picture. In the very first CFP in 2014, the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs (TCU) were ranked #3 going into the final playoff selection. The Horned Frogs plummeted to #6 after winning their final game and crushed all hope of playing for a national championship. The Baylor Bears were sitting at a #6 spot going into the final
The college football national championship is the highest level in the United States. For years, two of the top rank team in the polls play for national championship. It was that way until 2014 when the NCAA decides to have a committee of 13 to choose the four best team to play in the first-ever playoff. Winners of the top five power conference championship would be invited to play in the playoff. But only four teams would be pick leave one conference out of the playoffs for the national championship. With the win, your conference championship has been a big part of who would play in the playoffs, until 2017 when Ohio State won their conference but would be left out and not able to play for national
On January 12th 2015 Ohio States football team strapped on their helmets and laced up their shoes to play The Oregon Ducks football team in the BCS Championship Game on National television. This year was particularly special because the NCAA changed the format for the Bowl Season for this year but for the foreseeable future. This year was the first year of the playoff system, in years before this the
The turmoil at Florida after Urban Myer left, the chaos that has been Tennessee, which has only recently been calmed by the inception of Butch Jones or the consistent underperformance of Mark Richt coached Georgia teams. However, although coaching is a factor, perhaps the true reason lies with recruiting. It stands to reason that the better players on the field will win. Yes, we all know of the team that overperforms. They play above their ability. In most cases though, when lined up across from each other on the line of scrimmage, the best player will win. This year, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida are all boasting top 10 recruiting classes, although Tennessee might be just outside. However, they have had two top 10 classes in recent years. Better players, an upgrade in coaches and a desire to regain dominance or at least relevance in their own conference is why this might be the SEC east’s
With the annual debate revived by fans and sportswriters, the involvement of the federal government, and the financial benefit that bowl games offer schools, the issue of wheatear to replace the Bowl Championship Series with a playoff system continues to be one of the most discussed aspects of college football. Most people agree the Bowl Championship Series should be replaced by a playoffs, however there are a few who believe otherwise. The Bowl Championship Series works, and college football has never been more successful, thrilling, popular, or more enjoyable than ever. The Bowl Championship Series is fairer, safer and more effective than a playoffs.
With another academic school year passing by, college football fans were able to join another out the seat nail-biting highlighted NCAA football season. Majority of the people would agree that college football is just as competitive and popular as the NFL. The annual revenue of the top 25 college football teams can reflect that assumption by grossing over 1.2 billion dollars alone. There is one major difference between the two associations which is NFL players are paid off the money they help bring in and college student athletes are not. Providing scholarships to the athletes isn’t enough anymore if the NCAA Football wants to perceive themselves as a money making competitor, and not reward the athletes that helped bring in that type of money.
Statistics from the Gallup poll stated that, “85% of college football fans supported a change to a playoff system of some kind. 69% of fans surveyed preferred the idea of a playoff tournament involving the top four, eight, or 16 teams to replace bowl games while 16% preferred a one-game playoff between the top teams emerging from the post-season bowl games.” The way that the sport runs is from the money the teams make from their fans. If the fans get what they want, more people will come to the games, and more money will be
This is one area that is frequently disputed. Occasionally, when a small conference school has a remarkable season, but lose in their conference tournament, that school will bump a major or mid-major school from consideration.
The top twenty-five teams in Division I football battle each and every week for a better spot in the rankings. Most of the time it comes down to the last week of season play to determine which two teams will progress into the national championship game. The top teams should be given an opportunity to earn their way into the championship
Next would be The Florida State Seminoles, FSU’s sports teams. The Seminoles compete in the NCAA Division I. Football and baseball teams usually dominate the competition. Florida, one of only two schools, appears in the top 10 in each of the past 25 NCAA national all-sports rankings, but there's more to being a Seminole than football and basketball. The school traces its beginnings to a small college that prepared students to be priests in 1853, but over the past decade the university has become more selective, especially among out-of-state students, posting steady advances in its incoming classes' average
play with contenders in the power conferences. In 2007 a one loss Florida Gators team won the Southeastern Conference title game and jumped ahead of number two Michigan who didn’t play that week. In 2004 an undefeated Auburn Tigers team was not able to able to play for the National Championship because they started out at a ranking of 17 in the beginning of the season and were not able to jump ahead of USC or Oklahoma since they went undefeated as well.
"Surely, the NCAA and Division I-A football can join the other 23 intercollegiate sports and devise a system that determines a true champion, preserves the integrity of the game and levels the playing field, LaVell Edwards, Former Brigham Young University Coach.” This statement was made to the Senate last summer by the only coach to win a national championship at Brigham Young. In every other collegiate sport in the United States the champion is decided by a playoff system. Even the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL the champion is decided by a playoff. The excuse that most of BCS executives is that you cannot have one hundred twenty teams playing in a playoff. Nevertheless, the FCS formerly Division 1-AA who has one hundred forty teams plays under a very effective 16 team playoff format. The BCS has infringed themselves among college football due to the root of all sins, money. In January 10, 2010
Every year I can’t wait to start watching football. I like Nfl games, but the NCAA is my favorite. Usually the NFL has the same good teams each year give or take a few, but each year NCAAF can be totally different. Most of the time Alabama (ROLL TIDE!) is in the top 5 along with most southern teams.
