The advances made in information technologies are causing an increasing number of ethical problems. The power used to processing computers doubles about every two years. Organizations are more dependent than ever before on their information systems. The Ethical problems arising from the appropriate use of customer information, personal privacy, and the protection of intellectual property have lead to increased laws to regulate the way data is collected. There are also privacy issues involved collecting, storing, and disseminating information about individuals.

The accessibility issues revolve around who should have access to information and whether they should have to pay for this access created ethical concerns with the advances in IT. These accessibility problems can be linked to formation of the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), which promotes the accuracy, fairness, and privacy of information in the files of consumer reporting agencies. There are many types of consumer reporting agencies, including credit bureaus and specialty agencies (such as agencies that sell information about check writing histories, medical records, and rental history records). 3
We can see many instances where personal information collected by these agencies was used unethically by others to assume the identities of the consumers. If you are a victim of identity theft or are on active duty with the military, you have more rights under the FCRA. You may seek damages from violators. If a consumer reporting agency, or, in some cases, a user of consumer reports or a furnisher of information to a consumer reporting agency violates the FCRA, you may be able to sue in state or federal court. 4
These ongoing ethical issues that will need to be regulated due to the continued advances in
Privacy, as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary, is the quality or condition of being secluded from the presence or view of others, and the state of being free from public attention or unsanctioned intrusion. Interestingly, the Constitution of the United States does not expressly protect a person 's right to privacy; there are however some provisions to privacy within the Bill of Right and the Amendments to the Constitution. Among them are the first amendment, that ensures the privacy or belief, the third amendment, that ensures the privacy of home, and the fourth amendment, that ensures the privacy of person and possession.
Privacy (http://www.dictionary.com/browse/privacy) is being by ourselves. “The state of being free from unwanted or undue intrusion or disturbance in one's private life or affairs; freedom to be let alone.” “Freedom from damaging publicity, public scrutiny, secret surveillance, or unauthorized disclosure of one’s personal data or information, as by a government, corporation, or individual.” Having a state of concealed/secrecy.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) was created in 1914 primarily as a way for the government to “trust bust” or apply regulations ensuring a free marketplace for U.S. consumers and business enterprises. In this regard, the FTC enforces antitrust viola- tions that could hamper consumer interests, as well as federal consumer protection laws against fraud, deception, and unfair business practices. The commission’s primary enforcement mechanism is the Bureau of Consumer Protection, which is divided into seven divisions: (1) enforcement, (2) advertising practices, (3) financial practices, (4) marketing practices, (5) planning and information, (6) consumer and business educa- tion programs, and (7) privacy and identity protection.21 As the federal
The agency could impact the business if we were stating facts about our company that are not true. Or if we were telling a customer all the things we did to groom the animal but we only did a couple of the things listed. Our products and services require us to provide realistic and factual data, but the we can’t guarantee variables impacting the results because they are uncontrollable. The company needs to abide by the guidelines and requirements of the Federal Trade Commission.
Congress granted sweeping powers to the CFPB that critics suggest exceed what legislators intended when they passed the Dodd-Frank Act. The bureau has investigated discrimination in auto lending, targeted credit unions, implemented rules for debit cards and created a controversial consumer complaint hotline. A recent CFPB proposal would allow consumers to rate financial companies on a scale of 1 to 5 in surveys without any guidelines for the ratings.
Privacy is the state of being free from unwanted or undue intrusion or disturbance in one’s private life or affairs, also known as the freedom to be left alone (dictionary.com). The right of privacy is the right of a person to lead their life in a manner that is somewhat protected from public scrutiny. Privacy is a fundamental building block most governments try to uphold when it pertains to citizens. A person has the right to determine what information is taken about them and how that information will be used. In the novel Little Brother, by Cory Doctorow, the right of privacy is a topic the main protagonist, Marcus, struggles with extensively due to the expert technology and surveillance available.
The FTC’s work is performed by the Bureaus of Consumer Protection, Competition and Economics. The body of the Bureau of Consumer Protection was created to protect consumers against unfair, deceptive or fraudulent practices in which it enforces a variety of consumer protection laws enacted by Congress. It protects consumers obtaining credit to finance their transactions, ensures that adequate credit is provided, and governs the credit industry in general. Congress passed the Consumer Credit Protection Act, in part, to regulate the consumer credit industry, requiring creditors to disclose credit terms to consumers. The Consumer Credit Protection Act also protects consumers from loan sharks, restricts the garnishing of wages, and established the National Commission on Consumer Finance to investigate the consumer finance industry. Credit card companies, credit reporting agencies, and certain debt collectors are regulated by the Act. The Act also prohibits discrimination based on sex or marital status in extending of credit.
There are a number of existing consumer protection laws that were handed over to the CFPB including the Truth-in-Lending Act, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. The CFPB will ensure consumers receive simple and accurate information with applying for a mortgage, credit card, personal loan and any other financial products and services. The biggest criticisms about the CFPB are one, they follow the one-size-fits-all rule when writing regulation and two, have all the control with no one overseeing them.

Privacy can be a sore subject for many people, but what does is really mean? Privacy is the state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people. The majority of the population would be uncomfortable knowing that someone knows just as much about their personal life as they do themselves. Without privacy one can feel a sense of being exposed. Although, a large amount of people in society don’t really express their importance of privacy until it is actually breached. In my mind privacy is something that everyone should have until a certain extent. I can understand if government or the law were to get involved in your privacy if they see a reason too. If the person interfering with your privacy doesn’t have lawful
What is privacy? Can anyone truly have privacy in this day and age? According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, privacy is “the state of being away from public attention” (Merriam-Webster). Privacy is very valuable, and sometimes underappreciated aspect of life. Here in the United States, there are many laws that are meant to help protect the privacy of a person. One of these laws put in place is the Privacy Act of 1975, which establishes “a code of fair information practices.” This act regulates the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of a person’s information by federal executive branch agencies. (Scott). There are even laws that protect particular private information, one of the most well-known is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act

Many employers are requesting credit report authorizations from their applicants as part of their screening process for employment. According to the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the applicant must give the employer authorization in order for the employer to receive a copy of the credit report. (Rosen, 2000). Credit reports are requested by some employers to review and verify information about the applicant such as, his/her identity, the amount of debt and also to help them to determine if one is qualified for the job. The credit report contains a variety of personal information for example, ones first and last name, the social security number, current and past addresses, ones
I define the meaning of privacy as a basic human right to be able to keep one’s personal information, activities and communication protected against public observation.
