There is a bible proverb that states, "In everything you do, put God first…" In laymen's term, is as we are on our journey of life, we should carry the message of God in all that we do. In the story "A Good Man in Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, it is about a family on a trip from Georgia to Florida for a vacation and the troubles they run into on the road. One of the characters is the Grandmother. She is a god-fearing woman, in her own way, but is miss guided in her religious ways. Another character is the Misfit, he is an escaped convict on the run from the law. He is trying to make is way to Florida, when he runs into the Grandmother and her family. The Grandmother was trying to appeal to the Misfits good nature, by saying "You're not a bit common!" (CITE). She was trying to explain to him that she believed that he was not an ordinary person, he must have come from good parents. The Misfit respond by simply saying "… I ain't a good man" (CITE). When face to face with the Misfit the Grandmother said "Why you're one of my babies. You're one of my own children!" (CITE). This was her last attempted to save her life. In this last attempted she reached out and put her hand on the Misfits shoulder. As soon as she touched him he jumped back and shot her three times. It was this final act, to appeal to him for his soul, not her own that scared the Misfit into quickly shooting her. In the end, she had finally reached God, not to save herself, but for the benefit of someone else.
The other major character in O'Connor's short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is the Misfit. This character is first introduced immediately after the family traveling from George to Florida has a car accident. The Misfit, unlike the Grandmother, has a clear understanding of himself. Both characters are seeking are seeking redemption through salvation. The protagonist is the Grandmother in this story. She is a religious woman in appearance only, but it is when she faces certain death that she is able to find God. She is able to live he last few minutes a righteous woman. The antagonist is the Misfit. He is a criminal, seeking justification for a crime that he feels the punishment was unjust. “I call myself The Misfit … because I can't make what all I done wrong fit what all I gone through in punishment" (CITE). Salvation for the Misfit come in the form of understanding. He understands what he does is wrong, but he feels the world around him is the same. He reasons it with himself in the story by saying "No pleasure but meanness" (CITE), but at the end of the story after he kills the grandmother, he says “It’s not real pleasure in life” (CITE). He understands that world around him is not how he once perceived it to
