Is Social Media Making Us Less Social?

Why do people prefer to spend time on social networks instead of sharing moments in real time with loved ones? It is well known that social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter, were created to connect people and strengthen friendships. However, it is also true that social media is dividing families, friends and society instead of connecting them. Social media is hurting the quality of real relationships because its usage involves negative effects such as wasted time, private information shared, and bullying.

Social media has changed the way people think and how they communicate.  It’s incredible to see how social media has become such a big part of our daily lives. Just to think social media as we know it was birthed less than ten years ago in August 2003 with MySpace and has become such an integral part of our daily lives. Synonymous with checking our email we go to our Facebook for not only our daily gossip, but for up to date news and events.

Social media has developed our relationships and friendships for the better. First, these days we are able to contact each other by social media easily since we have been enabled to read our friends' tweets on Twitter, or we see Their pictures on Instagram. We can also communicate with our families even though if we live in different cities or even countries, due to the social media’s applications such as Skype and FaceTime (Koifman, 2014). For example, although there many students nowadays who have been studying abroad for a long period, they rarely feel homesick because of these applications. Social media platforms are defined as a constructed private or semi-public profile within a bounded system that links other users with whom they share a connection with and the “webs” between friends and family are created (Boyd). Social media platforms are decreasing the value of interpersonal relationships in our youth and this has led to a noticeable nuance in the values of the previous generation and the current one.

Technology has progressed profoundly over the past decade or so making communication easier and keeping past friendships alive. While this may be a good way to expand relations and get to know more people, do you really know all of those 1256 friends you have on facebook? Probably not. Technology and social media give us a window into other people’s lives that we would have no idea about without these websites. Granted that with it we are connected to many more people, technology i believe actually takes away from and hinder real life social interaction. Maria Konnikova mentions in her article “The Limits of Friendship” that according to Robin Dunbar’s research that there are layers of friendship. A person’s five closest friends or support group, 15 friends they could go to for comfort or sympathy, 50 close friends and 150 casual friends and a person can put together about 1500 names with faces at the absolute most.

Even though technology has linked people together by keeping people in touch with family, friends all the time through different sources, people pay more attention to their technological activities, lack valuable, real-life relationships with people around them, only associate with people who share the same interests, while they denigrate those who oppose their viewpoints and, lastly, people are losing communication skills because of it.

Social media is used every second to connect one person to another. Networking can easily be done by the click of a button. Businesses run solely via social media. Families are able to keep in touch with each other with photos, updates, and messaging. The changes made over the last few years have directly impacted the way that we live our lives with those around us. LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. allow us to connect within the matter of seconds.

Throughout the past few years, society has become more and more technologically advanced. Whether it be a cell phone, tablet, computer, television or any other device, most people have some sort of technology. With technology comes social media and social buzz. Everything people do, adult or teenager, can be linked with social connections. A simple tweet or Facebook status can be posted in a second. News can travel throughout the media instantly. Is all this technology and social connections a good idea? Social media has increasingly altered everyone’s true understanding of personal information. Electronic tools and social media buzz has hindered the general understanding of what our technology truly was made for.

It’s quite the contradiction that nowadays with social media it is easier to talk with people but it’s harder to have a real bond with them. We can meet people on sites like twitter and Facebook or message boards but it isn’t as intimate as having a face to face conversation with another human being. This is making us a more lonely society. In a survey people in 1985 had a mean size of 2.94 personal confidants in 2004 the number was 2.08 (Marche 603). Also in 1985 10 percent of the American people had no with whom to talk about important matters with and 15 percent said they only had one good friend. By 2004 these numbers were up to 25 percent for nobody to talk to and 20 percent for only one good friend (Marche 603). What these numbers indicate is that the rise in technology has made us have less close personal relationships. In the information world where social media Web sites had become part of almost everybody’s lives, disseminating personal information had become easy and larger in terms of scope and scale and anybody who has access to the internet can easily do so. Anybody who has access to this social media website can reveal news of engagements and breakups, job gains and losses, or even news of life and death; it's easy to become overwhelmed especially when you need to keep up with friends and families from a distance or in a different geographical location.

From Six Degrees, the internet moved into the era of blogging and instant messaging (Hale). Social media has a massive impact on our society and is very beneficial to all of us.

Before social media, communication was limited to phone calls and letters. Then came multiple social media sites where the where the main purpose is communication. Social media has the ability to broaden our worldview and the ability to keep up to date on information. On the other hand, communication is now preferred by many people to be through social media sites and it’s affecting our interpersonal communication. Social media has changed the way we communicate with others and interact with the world around it, and it’s been both a negative and positive thing.

Having online friends has rapidly become a ‘norm’ in society, and multitudes of people argue that without social media these people from different countries and even continents would not be able to meet. While this is definitely a valid point, it is also crucial to consider that in a majority of these friendships only the ‘positive qualities’ about a person are interchanged in “conversation”.
