As Stephanie prepared to attend her first Mexican quinceañera or birthday party, she felt a bit apprehensive. She was unsure as to how she was going to be received. She worried that others might judge her or wonder why she was at the party. Stephanie also worried that she may not be able to communicate effectively, as most of the people attending spoke Spanish as their first language. As Stephanie arrived at the event she could hear loud music and smell food before she even go to the house. Upon entering the house she was greeted by her friend who had invited her to the event and the host. The host was a middle aged woman who spoke very little english, but immediately hugged Stephanie and welcomed her into her home. The host immediately …show more content…
Stephanie learned that quinceañera are always full of family and not just immediate family but generations and generations, friends, food, alcohol, and music. It wasn’t long after Stephanie arrived that she was immediately ushered over to a table full of food and was told to eat. Stephanie was also handed a tequila shot and got the feeling from looking around that to turn it n or the food down would be extremely insulting. As Stephanie ate her food, several people came over to check on her and see if she needed anything and to see if she liked the food. When Stephanie compliment the food, she could see the pride on several Mexican women faces as they admitted they had cooked the food. Stephanie began to realize that food and hospitality was a very important part of their culture. Here Stephanie was worried about not being accepted at the party and their whole goal of the host was to make her feel at home. When Stephanie began to observe the people in attendance she noticed she was the only white person at the event but it didn’t seem to matter to anyone at the party. Stephanie had worried that they may wonder why she was there or question why a white person would be at
Stephanie’s experience in grade ten shows that she is self-conscious about her image at school. She secretly loves Doug and “[writes] poems to Doug and [keeps] a list at the back of [her Doug book] of all the things that [makes] Doug cool” (1). This book is supposed to be confidential until one day someone finds it and exposes her poems. After this event, she avoids any written evidence of her love for Paul, implying that she cares about how other schoolmates see her. Another clue is when Doug said the rock group Oasis was contemptible, Stephanie “[prays] that no one would tell him that she used to like Oasis”(3), trying to create a fake identity to conceal her real self, which are

Like most little girls, I always dreamed of having a quinceañera. A quinceañera is a traditional party that most latino families celebrate when a girl turns 15. It represents how the young girl is growing up to become a woman. After many months of planning and stressing, on August 12, 2012, it was my big day! All my family & friends collaborated into making this dream come true. I still remember that day as if it was just yesterday.
“We’re proud to announce that we’ve just learned senior Lizet Ramirez has become the first student in Hialeah Lakes history to be accepted to Rawlings University.” (P. 185) Due to standing out at home for her intelligence, being identified by the color of her skin was quite a shock for Lizet. Everywhere she turns, it’s as if her race is the only aspect about her that matters. For example, during orientation, she is told she
The white privilege form DiAngelo and Sensoy that I would be using is the positioning of whites as racially innocent. During the dialogue between the two friends this concept of becoming the ‘perfect stranger’ applies directly to this case. After the scenario between the BF and the security guard, the Bf explained her reasoning of why she stood so firm against having her belongings being searched. She saw this search as being “racially profiled”. However, even though the BF explained to her WF why she was refusing this random search, the WF mentally refuse to see the racial perspective that her BF portrayed, and became the ‘perfect stranger'. “I don’t know anything about that. It’s never happened to me.” According to Diangelo and Sensoy, this

Here it is I think Kristi won’t come to the dance because I told her I wasn’t going but I’m wrong. Probably two minutes after Jason comes inside Ryan and Kristi walk in. “Catherine? I thought you couldn’t come! I’m so happy you changed your mind”. I stand up. “Jason this is Ryan and my next-door neighbor Kristi”. I could Kristi was confused by the way she moved her eyebrow. “Jason can’t talk so he uses these cards, and I’ve been making words for him. He’s my very good friend”. Jason taps. Catherine. Talk. About. You. All the time. That’s when Kristi says “Really. She could’ve told me more about you”. Now I feel like a squished

A quinceanera is a religious celebration that is celebrated when a young girl turns fifteen. This is a time where the birthday girl is going from girlhood to womanhood. Quinceaneras are celebrated in Spanish-speaking countries and the United States. The elaborate celebration begins with a mass, and is followed by a party or reception. A mass is a memorial of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. People who are invited to the mass is the girl, her family and her godparents. At the party portion of a quinceanera the girl's friends and family are invited. As the girl walks in she is accompanied by her “court” also known as her maids of honor. The party has lots of delicious food, and entertainment such as music and dancing.
The group was intresting to say the least. She wasn't big into psychology or experiments but she was curious how they'd all get along at a dinner party. Shay has some beef with Leslie and Tomoka so that will make it twice as funny. Two pinning nerds, a psychopath, a complete fake, a loud "socially anxious" buzzkill, a closted bisexual, a drunk, and an a girl who has to sit in the middle of a complete fake and a loud "socially anxious"
2. She started her own family with many ups and downs. Her children, grandchildren, and, at the time, boyfriend made her feel less gray.
After I get into the food court, I was looking for a place to sit to make my observation and take notes, but it was all occupied. As a way to observe the interaction between people better, I decided to ask a girl that seemed to be American if I could sit with her, but she strangely looked at for a few seconds and said “No, I’m sorry.” Then, I asked another for a sit, and she accepted. I was already observing the way people deal with from different skin color, and I had the feeling that this would be the most relevant thing that I was going to observe. My observation lasted for about one hour, and I had the opportunity to ask different questions to the girl about race and how is it to be white in America. The way that people interact and behave in public spaces is mostly shaped by their ideologies based on race and
