There is a lack of information and misrepresentation when it comes to non-monosexual/romantic orientations such as bisexuality. Some of the vocabulary that it used to describe this orientation can be misleading. Bisexual has the prefix of bi, meaning two, but the orientation itself is more broad than the sexual attraction to just two genders. What is also commonly unknown is that bisexuality is also a romantic orientation. There is little information out there concerning bisexual people and such a lack of resources may have them looking for answers that are not, but should be out there. Alternatively, most of the information that is out there and available is wrong and delegitimizes bisexuality. America is a monosexual society in its history, legislation, and media. Bisexuality has constantly been misrepresented because of America 's monosexual standard towards individuals.

An individual who asserts they are bisexual are usually attracted to both men and women. The client may experience some of the same emotional and/or sexual feelings when with the same gender. Some of the bisexual community may feel stronger towards one sex then the other, while some may turn to other sexual identities, many maintain a bisexual identity (Robbins, Chatterjee, Canda, 2012). As a social worker, it is important we become educated working with this population as many through my studies have feelings of marginalization as a result of not only from the GBT community, the heterosexual community, but within the counseling community.

The history of the gay rights movement has been a hard fought battle within the United States. In fact the first gay rights movement dates back to 1924 with the creation of The Society for Human Rights in Chicago, Illinois. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that gay rights started to make progress. In the year 1969 The Stonewall Riots took place when gay, lesbian, and transgender patrons of a New York bar were raided by the police. This forever changed the movement from isolated incidents to a world wide phenomenon.

Many people think that bisexuals are promiscuous and more likely to cheat just because they like more than one gender, but this is so wrong; it's a persons personal beliefs that will make them cheat not their sexuality and it is damaging because it makes bisexuals feel ashamed about their sexuality, many people that are cheated on by a partner that is bisexual blames the bisexuality and not that person and this is biphobic. There is also the myth that bisexuals are confused and it’s a phase which is wrong because they know they like more than one gender it is why they identify as bisexual this leads to bi-erasure because the people that say these things don’t believe that bisexuality exists. Bisexual people tend to date and have preferences based on society’s terms and categories. Being bisexual can be an exemplifying experience when determining your sexuality for the first time. But being in one of the most marginalized communities within the LGBTQ it can be very hard to navigate relationships from both sides of the spectrum. “Being bisexual can be a marginalizing experience in both queer and hetero spaces” (Rogers 1). Relationships are hard, relationships are harder navigating with a non-monosexual orientation.

Within the last decade society has become more open to ideology and lifestyles that years ago were tabo. This is largely due to the fact that the millennial generation may be one of the most laid back and accepting generations of all time. One major lifestyle that was rarely expected was homosexuality within the last decade this issue is no longer in the closet. Most people feel comfortable being open about their lifestyle choice and even show it off. Shortly after the acceptance of gays by society a new issue presented itself and this is transgender people. The community as whole fights for their rights together and it is referred to as LGBTQ. LGBTQ means lesbians, gays, transgender, bisexual, and queer. The LGBTQ community has made great progress in the last decade they have become more open about their community and have gained rights that they should have always had. Even though the community has made progress they still have a long way way to go especially within the workplace.

The trait of homosexuality can be simply defined as the sexual attraction between the individuals of the same sex. A homosexual person in the female gender is called ‘lesbian’ while the term ‘gay’ represents a homosexual male (Richardson).
