As a college student, employee, roommate, and daughter, I find myself negotiating and witnessing a wide variety of negotiations almost on a daily basis. Harvard University defines negotiation as the following: “Negotiation is a deliberative process between two or more actors that seek a solution to a common issue or who are bartering over an item of value. Negotiation skills include the range of negotiation techniques negotiators employ to create value and claim value in their deal making business negotiations and beyond” (Harvard.edu). The following two scenarios illustrate the use of techniques individuals, including myself, employ during the negotiation process to reach end solutions. Subsequently, I highlight the similarities and differences between the two scenarios: to encourage college students and young professionals to grow comfortable partaking in negotiations to further their personal and professional development. Our personal relationships with our family members offer advantageous opportunities to develop our negotiation skills. Recently, my parents and I had a discussion as to whether I should stay in mid-city Los Angeles and live at home and commute to Irvine, where I will work my first full-time job after graduation, or move to Irvine. My parents would like me to stay at home to help financially, and because they have a strong desire to keep my family united. My first full-time job will be with Citi as an analyst. Negotiation is a fundamental form of dispute resolution involving two or more parties (Michelle, M.2003). Negotiations can also take place in order to avoid any future disputes. It can be either an interpersonal or inter-group process. Negotiations can occur at international or corporate level and also at a personal level. Negotiations often involve give and take acknowledging that there is interdependence between the disputants to some extent to achieve the goal. This means that negotiations only arise when the goals cannot be achieved independently (Lewicki and Saunders et al., 1997). Interdependence means the both parties can influence the outcome for the other party and vice versa. The negotiations can be win-lose or win-win in nature.
Negotiation occurs on a regular basis in a daily life and individuals negotiate in business occasions or outside of the workplace. Having superior negotiation skills is conductive to the success in personal life and career development. In this course, I have learned that it is possible to dramatically improve my ability to negotiate. I can improve my monetary returns and feel better about myself and the people with whom I deal. I also learned that there are several ways to test my intuition and approach. The course provided me with an opportunity to assess my “instinctive” bargaining style and provides suggestions for how to further develop my bargaining abilities. The negotiation exercises were a good way to cement several of the concepts from the book and lecture and gave me several opportunities to get to know my classmate more and test some new insights with them.
