“December 7, 1941, a day that will live in infamy.” Those exact words, spoken by President Franklin D. Roosevelt were in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which changed the course of American History forever. Many people don’t know how or why the Japanese did what they did to Pearl Harbor. Some people believe they did it out of hatred for the United States, others believe that it was for a step up in the war. This paper focuses mainly on the events leading to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the chaos it created, and the aftermath of this devastating tragedy. The Arizona and the Oklahoma were the only two of the eight battleships that were able to be repaired and return to service. Probably the only good outcome of this attack was that they failed to destroy the only oil storage facilities on the Island. December 8, 1941, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave his most famous speech ”A date which will live in infamy”, and finally declared war on Japan.
After the dust cleared a few days later, people started pointing fingers. Admiral Husband Kimmel and General Walter short were the Army and Navy Commanders at the time of the attack, so people started blaming them. Shortly after they were relieved to duty later investigations showed that there was know knowledge of the attack on anyone. When people saw those Japanese fighter planes appear over the Pearl Harbor sky, not one of them thought that it was going change the course of American history forever.
